Wagner College

Hi,

Does anyone have any information regarding Wagner College and their Theater Department. My T just interviewed for their design concentration. She seemed to like it very much.
Mbe

yeah, i'd like to know something about wagner, too.....

is it audition-based?

Yes, she did design, so was just interviewed, but people were there auditioning.

Wagner is audition based, I auditioned and was accepted. It's suppsed to be a fairly decent program, and obviously has a fabulous location (staten island). What they do there is after all the applications are in, they invite the top 200 or so with the best grades to audition. I beleive they accept 45 in total and have a waitlist of 25.

Are you going? Where else have you applied and been accepted. My T was accepted there and we are trying to figure out if it is the best school for her. She likes the smallness and the proximity to the city. She was also accepted to Rutgers Mason Gross, which I think has a better dept., but she doesn't like that it is so big.

I think that she will wind up at Wagner.

I'm not positive yet, but I don't think I will be going to Wagner. I've also been accepted to Buffalo and OCU, waitlisted at BW, and have 4 more schools to hear from. The location is great, and so is the program. It's all about what school is right for you.

Went to see Oklahoma at Wagner tonight and it was terrific. Recommend going to see it if you are interested in the college or if you just want to see a really good college musical dance production. Check on their site for the dates this weekend and next week.

Where on their web site can you find the high school credit requirements? I need to know their application requirements for foreign language credits, math credits, etc. and cannot find it anywhere on the web site.

According to USNews, Wagner requires:

Units Required

English 4
Mathematics 3
Science 2
Lab 1
Foreign language 2
Social studies 1
History 3
Academic electives 6
Total academic units 21

*One unit equals one year of study or its equivalent.

Going to see the Touring Company Wicked in Hartford later this month. Glinda graduated from Wagner!

NJmtmom - I saw her when Wicked was in Boston - she was terrific!

We saw Wicked in Boston, too. I didn't know she is a Wagner grad....I thought she was excellent. We have liked what we've seen and learned about Wagner's program. Beautiful campus, too.

Does anyone know if you have to send the arts supplement and a DVD to Wagner before you can set up an interview??? It seems a bit different than the other schools in setting up an audition...trying to get organized! HELP!

I think that's the way they used to do it in the past, but last year when my daughter auditioned they said they did away with sending in the preaudition packet because it was too difficult for many to manage and took too much time, so now it's a standard audition process but I do believe they look over your transcript for academics before they grant you an audition. I believe your grades need to be in the average range. Call the school for more info. they are so helpful.

Shellipearl...Soooo last year did you just send the application? ..Did you audition on the audition day?.. If you are going to Wagner what made you decide on this school. I'm afraid it might be too small for my daughter...
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shellipearl..Thanks for all the very helpful info..My daughter interviewed with admissions when she visited with my husband. I didnt get to see the camppus so hopefully I can go in February...Now we have to wait to be asked to audition I guess...

Megnut- Its definitely worth it to tour wagner and maybe have lunch in their cafeteria to get a better feel for it. My cousin is there (not for theatre) and, coming from Manhattan, she finds the atmosphere a little boring. It is a D1 school and it is a little preppy. That said, it is beautiful and its all about whether its right for you.

My S auditioned at Wagner a few years ago. We LOVED the school. It is small but you can see NY skyline from the cafeteria! It is easy to go off campus for the day if there isn't anything going on around campus! The department has many talented students and they put on a number of great performances throughout the year. The admissions department is very helpful and very caring when discussing academics and course offerings. My S chose a different college but thought the whole experience at Wagner was positive! He has a few friends at Wagner now who are very happy - one on a sports scholarship and the other in MT.

Wagner is my son's first choice. We went to see it when we were there in November for him to audition for NYU ED. Well, he went to humor me because I heard about it from another mom. He'd heard about it too, but was so enamoured with the thought of NYU that he didn't want to think about anything else. We visited Wagner that Monday, and he was IN LOVE within about 30 minutes. Walking around the campus only solidified it. The honors housing is primarily theatre students; one of the admins for the theatre department is just a love. She's a "mom" to many of the students, making sure those that couldn't get home for Thanksgiving had a place to go, etc. He's already adopted himself out to her. LOL!

He actually was smiling when he got the decline from NYU (he missed a key audition direction until 12 hours before call - I wouldn't have let him in, either.)

The kids were great. The staff and couple of professors we spoke with were really great. We ran into a Physics (??) prof on our tour, and he was really engaging with both the theatre kids as well as the pre-med one.

I'm just hoping that we get enough financial aid so that he can actually attend. He'll be great for them and they'll be wonderful for him.

My daughter was accepted to Wagner last year so we went to visit a few times. Overall, our feelings about the school were very positive. We saw 2 plays and sat in on classes. Everyone was helpful and friendly no one could have been nicer. We were definitely impressed. My daughter ended up feeling that another school was a better match because although the campus is gorgeous and the proxitmity to the city is great, she ended up wanting to be in a city-type atmosphere. But we felt Wagner had a lot to offer too. By the way I believe if you make their MT program they are pretty generous with scholarship money and you can also get a scholarship with an audition through their vocal program, but you can only get one scholarship so you have to choose vocal/chorus or MT.
