I am an international applicant from India. I have been wait-listed by Middlebury (most likely due to high financial aid requirement), and on their website they have stated, 'Should you wish, you may send a personal letter with updated information for your file, and/or have your most recent grades sent to the Admissions Office'.

Does this mean that the only thing I can do now is sent them my senior year grades (+if I win some national level competition, the results of that as well)? I have read elsewhere that a wait-listed candidates must send in another essay, or another recommendation letter. Is this true? How exactly do I proceed now?

Read what you wrote. Middlebury says this: “Should you wish, you may send a personal letter with updated information for your file, and/or have your most recent grades sent to the Admissions Office”

Your reply is this: " I have read elsewhere that a wait-listed candidates must send in another essay, or another recommendation letter. Is this true? How exactly do I proceed now? "

Follow Middlebury’s directions and don’t interpret. A PERSONAL LETTER with updated information (not another essay or rec letter).

fair question. But I would take it at face value – you can imagine the flood of unwanted and uneccessary documents every college would have to deal with if they didn’t state limits? Good luck on your WL

Do a search on this site… lots of good advice. The main thing, I think, is to make it clear that Middlebury is your top choice and, if admitted, you will definitely attend (assuming this is true.) From my reading here, I’d say don’t deluge them with stuff, but I WOULD include a brief, sincere, well-written note along those lines. Include your recent grades (assuming they’re good!) and any other new awards or accomplishments -even if not school-related. (Like getting something published, etc.) If you know who your admissions rep is for your location, address the letter to him/her. In the U.S., often times guidance counselors will also contact the admissions rep and reiterate the same: “This student is very committed to attending Middlebury. He has continued to excel at school, etc, and we continue to recommend him as a valuable addition to your student body.”

You should also look into whether those accepted off the wait-list will get any financial aid. After May 1st, most if not all the aid is typically gone. Even schools that are 100 percent need don’t always promise that to kids off the wait-list. If it’s a favorite, certainly do what they ask… a personal letter, updated info and current grades. After that, I’d move on and think seriously about your other options.
