anyone know how long these waiting lists usually are

I would like to know this too!

I was waitlisted last year and I am now happily attending Barnard. I got a phone call in mid May from my admissions officer that I had been accepted--so there is some hope. I continued to show my interest, send extra materials, and I sent in an extra teacher recc. Good luck!

i am on several waitlists...

just wondering, victorial, why do you think they picked you off of the waitlist? URM, high SATs, non-Financial Aid or just a great display of interest?

in other words: how do these schools decide who they will take off the waitlist?

Financial aid makes no difference with regards to admisison at Barnard (they are need-blind).

If you look at the Barnard admissions website, they explain that all waitlisted candidates are evaluated together once they see how many of the RD students accept their admissions offers (after May 1). They welcome additional material that will add to your admissions packet, and a letter reaffirming your desire to attend Barnard and further illustrating how it would be a great "fit" for you would help. Just make sure any new stuff you send to them adds something different to your app; don't just reiterate what you have already said.
