My D was just offered a spot at UMinn/Guthrie…I doubt she will change her mind at this point though. Too bad that program isn’t in California!
Carefully copy and paste the LAST list AND these instructions. Add your name/info (in alphabetical order) under each school where he/she is waitlisted so that is appears in red. I tried three times but that formula for RED colored posts is not working! I’ve done it plenty of times with no problem…
@marg928 No worries about the red ink – Congratulations are in order! Even if she doesn’t change her mind, it’s still a Win!
@marg928 YAY!
Wondering if wait list offers tend to go out this week? I mean do the schools contact the accepted kids they haven’t heard from yet since it’s may 1?
@theaterwork Yes. I assume this year will be no different from prior years; if schools are still looking to meet their yield, they will make offers through the summer. There are always stories of students getting a call in July!
Summer? An offer in July? LOL that is crazy…I mean who would expect a kid to accept that so late in the game? I mean you would have already committed somewhere else by then and would be pretty heavily invested at that point with attending orientation etc at the chosen school. Plus what would you do about even still having a spot in the class/school? I mean the school itself would have assumed you werent attending at that point and perhaps you wouldnt even have a spot? Plus housing would be a major problem I would think.
If it’s a kid’s dream school I have seen it happen more than once that they bail on their committed school and go for it.
@singoutlouise Can you stop payment until you have a chance to breathe?
Congrats to your daughter.
yes @theaterwork - I’m sure it is a HUGE issue but there are stories on CC (I will try to find one or two when I have more time) about students shifting gears over the summer. I would think it would have to be extraordinarily compelling to make a change at that time!
@KTVoice and @kaf011 we are trying to figure it all out…it’s complicated! But it has been her dream since she was 10 years old (honestly she researched schools then…) and to answer a question above - she would bail on a program for U Mich MT if it was August 31.
We have a friend who got an offer in June from her dream school - she took it. This was several years ago, but it happens!
So… if you got an offer from a waitlist in June say, and decided you wanted to accept it, would the school in general then be obligated to take you ? I mean you missed the May 1 deadline obviously and we are getting emails every other day from schools my D isn’t attending reminding us that the deadline is up and deposit is due. I mean they’re only obligated to keep your spot in the general school pool until May 1… so I’m guessing waitlist candidates are exempt from the deadline? Plus like I said housing has a deadline too so even though a lot of schools guarantee freshmen housing and actually require it in most cases… guessing they just stick you in a triple if they have to…
My D got stuck in a triple (affectionately called a “converted triple” - converted from an already quite small double!) and she got off the waitlist in very late April!
@theaterwork - students who are offered spots off of WL are generally given different deadlines. My D came off the NYU WL last year on April 29, and had 2 weeks to decide, make deposits & apply for housing - I think the same was true for the students who were accepted off the WL as late as August 1. Fortunately, NYU doesn’t do housing assignments until mid-summer, so even though she didn’t get her first choice, it wasn’t like the only options left were the un-airconditioned residence hall. I’m sure that some schools you do end up just taking what you can get, housing-wise, but that could be a small price to pay for getting to go to your dream school. We did lose the enrollment deposit we made to UAB, but they refunded her housing application deposit and orientation registration fee, which was nice, though unexpected b/c we were told it was non-refundable when we paid it.
I am assuming that there is no financial aid for students that accept after being WL? Son has NICE offer from MTU, have pd deposit, etc. Still waiting on dream school of U of M. BUT - $$$$$ UGH!!
That is not necessarily true. Every school is different. If you are needing need based aid, you may still get it. Merit awards…maybe yes, maybe no.
When my D was what was called “priority waitlisted” at CMU, they sent the financial aid package along with the waitlist notification. This was because in case she was offered a spot off of the waitlist, she would have 48 hours to accept or decline and so they revealed the financial aid package ahead of time. Yes, she was awarded aid as a waitlisted applicant. She did not get off the waitlist.
Our CMU waitlist financial aid package was the best deal we got…who knows why!?? And we were told she had the maximum scholarship at several schools - but they were still crazy expensive.
@singoutlouise Glad she doesn’t have to wait unitl Aug 31! Woohoo!!
