waitlist/gap year

My plan is, and always has been, to take a gap year and I have committed to spending a year in Africa volunteering starting this summer. I've been waitlisted at Middlebury, but do not know where I stand because I assume that if I was the be accepted off the waitlist then they would not let me defer my place? I'm an international student from the UK, Middlebury was my top-choice college! Anyone else been in this situation before? What's the best thing to do?

Boy, I don’t think this would be a great time to ask admissions that question. I would just wait and see if you get selected. Then re-apply if not . Just do a febmester if you get in.

In truth, since I made it clear from the outset that I had plans to take a gap year, I was surprised that I was even waitlisted in the first place - fully expected to be rejected. Especially because they would have known in doing so that I would not, realistically, be in a position to take a place at the college this fall given my placement overseas. Since the waitlist process does not exist in the UK I am just keen to ask the opinion of people who have a more informed view!

Not sure how the whole waitlist thing plays here. However, in general, the Midd Admissions folks LOVE gap years, almost as much as they love their Febs. At revisit days there will be a whole presentation on how they encourage gap years and how much they find it improves a students focus, performance and maturity overall.
