Hi, I just found out that I was waitlisted at Bates. It is my top choice. Does anyone know how many students are typically waitlisted at Bates? I intend to contact Admissions, but, in the meantime, I am trying to get a feel for my chances of being selected. Anyone out there who was selected from the waitlist in past years? And, one final question, do you know if the students on the waitlist are ranked?
Google “common data set Bates” and you will find those answers.
Thank you!
7 students taken off the wait list at Bates last year. Google and review the “Common Data Set” for such information on schools.
You can search the posting history of @lindagaf as her daughter was admitted off the waitlist at Bates last year, to check on timing of Bates action on waitlist etc.
@slalomDad 7?! That’s so few. There goes pretty much any hope my nephew gets off the list. Bummer
My son was offered a WL spot at Bates last year one week after May 1. There is typically more action in the beginning of May, and then it slows. Remember that there are students who will pay a deposit at Bates who will take a WL position at another school. If one of their preferred schools offers them a spot, it opens a spot at Bates.

According to the CDS, Bates took 49 off the wait list last yr and 11 the year before. Last year 334 accepted places on the wl and 49 were taken so that is about 15% - not bad. Or taken another way 49 out of about 480 first yr students means about 10% of the freshmen class were from the wl.
334 students accepted places on the WL (of 1068 offered it) last year and 49 were admitted. The # above in #3 may have been from an older report. (Perhaps the year before, which I recall was very low.)
Don’t forget too that some students will be offered a place from the WL but will not accept it at that time, so more than 49 students on the WL were offered spots. It varies from year to year, so it’s really hard to know what to expect.
Is the waitlist need blind? And do they still guarantee to meet 100% of financial need?
Read the link to see how my D got off WL last year. Last year’s number of students accepted from WL was unusual. The year before it was a very small number and that is generally the trend most years. I am guessing if that many got off WL last year, they will not want that to happen again. Not trying to discourage you, but just to make you aware that it is generally difficult to get off a waitlist. If you want to get off it, be very proactive and don’t be modest. Good luck.
