Waitlisted Wishes!

you call/e-mail them asap.

yea for the sake of all of us on the wait list!

Hey guys, I am just wondering if I can do anything to higher my chance on the wait list. I am going to call the schools I applied to because they want me to update my profile but other than that, is there anything we can do?

if someone reject a school, why can't the school decide sooner whom to pick up from the waitlist? so that they don't have to wait until April 10.

Gracie--because all schools over-admit to cover those people who will choose other schools. So they wouldn't need to go to the waiting list right away.

Most people wait until after revisit days (which are right before April 10th) to make their final decisions about where they are going.

oh, i see. Thanks Gemma. but what is the possibility to get accepted from a waitlist?

Kids, this is the way wait lists work.
There is not a 1,2,3 numerical list by school where an accepted student declines and the number 1 on the list gets accepted. The schools are all trying to build communities. For example, the orchestra director might be saying he needs a lead violinist because he has two graduating this year. The crew coach is saying I have to re-build my team because so many are graduating this year. The head of the math department is saying, get me someone who is a maths star who will help me out in Algebra 2 or Pre-Calc next year. The soccer coach is saying, we were really bad this year, help me strenthen my team.
So, the kid that was accepted because she is a great student and, oh, she will help that soccer coach rebuild his team decides to go elsewhere. Admissions looks at the waitlist for a comparable kid academically AND is skilled at soccer AND maybe has not asked for FA - that's the kid that gets the call.
Yes, there are wonderful stories every year of kids getting that last minute offer of admissions. But, by far, there are more disappointments.
If you have an acceptance elsewhere, and can afford it, go for it. Don't hang out trying to get off a waitlist.

What if some school X has most of their hockey defenseman players leaving (seniors), and an athletic recruit was put on waitlist w/FA? What are the chances for that?

i'm taking myself off the hotchkiss waitlist for junior girls. going to exeter probably

Is the athletic recruit a hockey defenseman and how skilled a player is he? If yes and very good, send in any athletic support/references/tape you may have, contact the coaches for admission support and see how your chances are then...

Hotchkissjin: I got waitlisted at Hotchkiss as a junior girl so maybe there is some very small probability that I could get in. That would be the best thing that has ever happened in my life. :)

Thanks to everyone who is getting off the waitlist =] Even though I'm personally probably not benefitting, it still helps.

She is very skilled. She has already contacted the coach. I'll let her know, or she can see herself... It's not me though, I'm allergic to sports.

How big are most boarding schools waitlists, if you had to take a guess?

Why bother making them long if they're unlikely to accept them?

yea i know

It matters the school...probably around 100? ..maybe. maybe not.

Most day school waitlists are ridiculous. One school near my area that I applied to a few years ago had a waitlist with like 180 kids on it!

The must have a low self confidence if they think that may kids will decide not to go...

well i mean i understand that.. if someone drops out they want kids that are good at different things (music, sports, math, science, speak 5 languages, etc.) to choose from to replace that person depending on what they were good at
