Waive/Do Not Waive Right to FERPA

Cancelled, sorry.

I believe the waiver you are referring to relates only to recommendation letters; no one is asking for a waiver of all FERPA rights. As to that particular waiver, there are many who recommend doing so under the belief that (a) the teacher might not write an honest letter if you don’t, or (b) and this is the one I hear mostly, that the college will think worse of you for not waiving it as to teacher recommendation letters. My personal view is that is all bull, colleges don’t look at you differently if you don’t waive the right, and if a student does not want to waive he should not. Also, I don’t know what you mean by the school telling students to change their election to waive access to rec letters. If the high school is requiring the change, it is in legal trouble under FERPA; if it is just recommending it that is probably OK.
