My sister and I toured Wake Forest and both got positive impressions. However, Princeton Review ranks it as among the top twenty "LGBT Unfriendly" colleges. A college that's supportive of it's LGBT community is important to both my sister and me and seriously affects what college we'll go to. Can anyone say if this ranking is accurate, or if it is, what makes it unfriendly?

It’s not a gay vs. straight issue, but a challenge for either orientation depending on how one engages her sexuality. For one thing, you don’t earn brownie points as a self-actualized gay or straight person at Wake Forest by going on to make porn films. From the average Wake Forest student’s point of view your education hasn’t gotten you anywhere if it’s only liberated you for trendy exhibitionism, whether that expresses as heterosexual screwing on ■■■■■■■ or riding another gay pride float through downtown Winston-Salem. If that’s your thing you should probably go to UNC, Duke, or Brandeis. But if, however your orgasm rages, you are inclined to explore your sexuality in the context of an intellectual tradition, to reflect on it, and to approach it as a positive life study, you should fit in fine at Wake Forest.

Hi Rosedog,
I just graduated from Wake Forest and could not disagree more with the rating we received in the Princeton Review. I identify as LGBTQ and had my speculation about going to Wake as well. But ever since the LGBTQ center has been on campus the climate has changed dramatically. To start off the faculty and staff are extremely supportive. By the time I was a senior I had come out to many of my professors because I wanted there advise on not only a good job to get after college but a good location and they were totally supportive of that. We also had a lavender graduation at the end of the year and many of the people who went were faculty and staff that were supported the students in the graduation.

The student body is open and accepting as well. If being a part of a sorority is something you and your sister want to do feel free. There are girls who are open and in a sorority on campus. And then there are students across many other organization that have been loved and accepted by there peers. You don’t have to be an active member of the LGBTQ center or GSSA to find your home. But you can also be in many groups and be an active member of both GSSA and the LGBTQ center.

On the wake forest commencement page under the senior profiles one of the students talks about her experience at wake. It’s under the question -How have you changed. http://news.wfu.edu/profile/2014-grad-jessica-leuchter/

Wake Forest is a great school with passionate professors and an amazing student body. You won’t be sorry you went there.

Hey!

So I see my good friend Jessica responded to your question!

My name is Richard Caban and I am a rosin Sophomore! I will be brutally honest with you.

You are going to have very little worry about, my dear! The school has a strong support system and many LGBTQ students! You may encounter problems with Greek life from time to time, but that is only what I have heard. I, personally, have had a very pleasant experience at Wake and even broughtShane Bitney Crone from the documentary Bridegroom to come speak at Wake Forest as an example of how open the campus is! Wake Forest isn’t super Prideful, and you will rarely see people flamboyantly expressing their sexualities (With Dress, Behavior, Etc.) but that can always be changed! Don’t worry, for I am certain you will find friends and a campus that is rather accepting of LGBTQ Students!

You can friend me on FB at Richard Caban-Cubero (Shoot me a message with more questions)!!

Thanks to everyone for the responses! This makes me feel a lot better about Wake Forest.
