Wake Forest Sports and Greek Life

How big are sports and Greek life at WFU? Like, do a lot of people attend sports games and join Greek life?

Greek life is huge!! Most of the parties are sponsored by fraternities, so if you are a guy, and non-Greek, it can be a little rough. WFUs official stats list Greek involvement at being around 40% but it feels higher than that.

One drawback of Greek life at Wake is that Wake’s administration is generally anti-Greek and appears to have targeted “mid-tier” and “low tier” frats/srats for extinction–so they are being subjected to a high level of scrutiny and disciplinary action which at times appear to flirt with infringing on the students’ freedom of association. For example, last year members of one sorority were told they could not be seen walking on campus with members of a specific fraternity. If you’re a member of one of these targeted fraternities/sororities it can be stressful and demoralizing.

As for sports games, they seem to be fairly well attended. The men’s soccer team is having an amazing year. Go Deacs!

As WFUparent said, Greek life basically dominates the campus. If you’re not in, then you most certainly will stick out.

But there are others (like myself and my friends) that congregate together for lack of support from people who are rushing or otherwise in Greek Life.

Almost all of the parties on campus are frat parties or lounge parties, and once spring semester comes, you learn who your true friends are. People truly segregate themselves based on their fraternity or sorority.

But for the amount of people affiliated: It’s certainly more than 40%. Probably pushing 60, 65% at the most.

For sports: they’re mostly attended, i suppose. A lot of people go to the tailgates (hosted by frats), then get drunk, then leave around halftime. I’ve only experienced football and soccer games so far, and out of the two, soccer gets much more participation from its fans. I hear that lots of people attend the basketball games, so perhaps those will have much more attendance than this year’s football games.

Frats get away with a lot of things (more than i can name), but I couldn’t quite imagine the campus without it. It would certainly be dead Thursday- Saturday nights.
