Wake or Babson ? Help ?

Hello to all!

I am torn between these two schools - reside in NJ - both are great school - so any one with some true pros and cons will help a lot as I decide.

I am interested in business (marketing preference) - so any insights on biz school of Wake compared to Babson will assist.

Also love to hear thoughts on both campuses and travel to Wake from those w/experience from northern NJ area -

Appreciate thoughts and insights here - I am torn - thanks so much in advance!!

Dear Chotts78,

My D attends Babson, she is a freshman this year. She also looked at Wake Forest. From the Babson standpoint, I would say:

–She was quickly immersed into the businesses classes with FME, accounting, business stats. She is getting a excellent education to prepare her to go into the business world.
–She says the seniors are getting fabulous jobs…even those that don’t have great gpa, like 3.0. Several of her “average” friends had great offers in the fall of their Senior year. No one seems to be worried about getting a great job.
–The school is small, so it is very easy to be involved and make a difference on campus. She loves the small class sizes and the teachers definitely know the students.
–She is an athlete, and did also attend the boys hockey and girls basketball games. The girls basketball team is very good D3.
–She did not join a sorority because she did not have any time being an athlete. The parties are all open on campus, so it sounds like they wander from party to party on campus.
–She got very involved right away and is very happy with her activities. She had a 3.8 gpa first semester, she applied and was accepted into the honors program.
–She loves Boston. She has gone to concerts and sporting events.

On the other side, Babson is a smaller school than Wake. She wishes it was a little bigger at times. The good news is she is in Boston with lots of colleges and the city life.

If you have any specific questions, please let me know. Both are great schools, but are very different. Good luck!

Wake is the perfect size in my opinion. Not too big, not too small. In the biz school at Wake, you’ll take plenty of business classes. I think Wake’s liberal arts curriculum gives you a chance to take other classes you may be interested in. Wake also has D1 sports if that matters and a southern presence whereas Babson is mostly Northeast kids.

Greek life is much bigger at Wake than Babson and both schools have great business programs that place very well in the job market.

What things are you looking for more specifically? (I’m from CT right outside nyc and lived in north Jersey so)

Dear Wneckkid99,

Thanks for your reply -

in terms of Wake

how easy is it to commute from northern NJ and

is acceptance to business easy - hear one needs to apply in sophomore year.

Thanks

Dear 2010freshman,

Thanks for the reply regarding Babson - the boston area is what interests me in Babson.

I like Ballet Dance - not sure if Babson has any options to pursue this.

Also - heard link with Wellesley - can diverse classes be taken and can the Wellesley dance facilities used in case Babson does not have that many -

Planning to visit Babson on April 8th and also Wake on 15th as we finalize here -

Thanks for your help.

Regarding travel: Not sure where in N. Jersey that you live but I am pretty sure that you would fly from Newark to Charlotte. You could fly to Greensboro which is closer but I think you would have to connect. If LaGuardia isn’t too far for you then you could fly direct to Greensboro on US Air out of LGA. Flight is about 75 min. Greensboro is about 30 min from Wake. My son does this all the time. It is really convenient flying out of NYC.

^^Continental flies directly from Newark into Greensboro 3-4 times a day…

I fly LaGuardia to Greensboro or end up driving from Connecticut. The drive is 11 hours, but it’s a breeze of a drive on open highways in the middle of nowhere really, and I only do it twice a year to have my car down at school.

As for business school acceptance…most people get in if they apply. If you get something like a 3.0 gpa overall and can get at least a B or B+ in intro to econ, accounting 101, and calculus 1, then you’ll be fine. All those classes are relatively easy, and I only know a few kids who didn’t get into the biz school but they had like 2.0 gpa’s.
