at the end of junior i decided i wanted to major in technical theater. i have no experience at all and most colleges require a portfolio. I’ve been in two musical theater productions but as a performer and i currently have a video production class. . how do i go on about this? do apply for a regular theater B.A and then make my way into a B.F.A for tech design or ??PLEASE HELP
Calm down and take a seat. Let’s do some reflections.
Why would you like to major in this field?
Is there anything else you want to do other than technical theatre?
What pushed you to just “decide at the end of junior year”?
And the biggest question is:
Why is it that you want to major in something that you have “literally no experience” in?
I honestly think you should try to get involved in tech theatre and actually be a part of it before deciding to try and major in it, because it’s definitely something that I could not have truly envisioned without trying it.
Luckily, most tech theatre jobs are all about experience and less about an actual degree. I would suggest applying to a school with a very strong theatre department and a very strong tech department to back it up. Once there, major in something else that interests you and do as much tech theatre on the side as possible. If you still decide you truly want to major in it and dedicate your life to it, look into transferring to a dedicated program (and you’ll have the portfolio then, too).
Good luck!
(Also, can I just add a lot of personal bias and say that I am 100% a tecchie at heart and I love it a lot and you’re making a good choice)
