I'm from Germany.
US universities that I had heard of before I started my college search (I had never even heard of the existence of LACs):
Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, Columbia, Brown, UC Berkeley

My simple guess would be that these institutions have the most prestige internationally.
I've been wondering why CalTech is completely unknown over hear (except among scholars)

^haha, I have friends here in Indiana who haven't even heard of the Ivy Leagues. people here only know about hte three state schools (Indiana, Purdue, Ball State).
I was talking to a guy online (highschool senior applying to colleges) and mentioned Cornell. I had no idea what I was talking about. I listed off some of the Ivies. out of all of them he'd heard of Harvard and Yale. maybe Princeton. had no clue about the existence of the others.
As for LACs... they might as well not exist around here.

My twin is going to Dartmouth...and no one at my school knows it's an Ivy. Which bites, as she's the first student from my school to get accepted to one.

My school only knows HYP, and Northwestern. They know of UChicago, but they think it's like easier to get into than NU but a wee bit more difficult than Loyola.

I think these are the most prestigious to the people in my area, not what I personally think:
1. Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, Rice, UT Austin, Texas A&M
2. Houston, TX

haha in Houston, liberal arts schools are unheard of.
