Was anyone else dissappointed with their visit to Pomona?

No, I’m definitely not a “party all-week” type of person. But I at least want to go to a party on a friday night.

I might visit again, but that will be during spring break, when all decisions have been sent out.

If your visit was during this past weekend, then yes, Pomona’s (and the other 5C’s) social scene must have seemed very weak.

It is no way near UCLA in partying, but kids here do party Wed-Sat. The biggest party nights are either fri or sat night, depending on when the main (or sometimes multiple) big themed party is. For instance, this Saturday Glitch Mob is coming to Scripps so thats going to be the main party attraction for this weekend. Parties are also held on Tues, Wed, Thurs and Friday nights, but they’re smaller affairs, but sometimes do get quite large, such as some Wednesday night Pubs.

However, Pomona def is not a “party” school like Penn state, UCLA/ big state schools are. Also, the town of Claremont is not a typical college town, so if you’re looking for that then UCLA is a much better fit.

Pomona’s academics, interaction with professors, and overall “intellectual” level on the other hand are exponentially better than UCLA’s, and a Pomona degree speaks volumes over a UCLA degree IMO. One should never really be bored on the weekend if they hang out with friends/party/ get out into LA.

Overachiever–

I’d recommend a revisit. Unless things have changed drastically in the 2 years since I’ve graduated, that wasn’t an indicative Friday night. Every once in a while you do get a dull Friday or Saturday–when exams are approaching, it’s raining torrentially or it’s parent’s weekend.

Sounds like 2 of the 3 were in play.

Pomona’s no UCLA in terms of the social scene but I was satisfied. Partied Wednesday through Saturday night. ; )

Good luck with your search.

I’m a Pomona grad, class of 2006. I contemplated transferring my freshman year to UCLA but decided against it. My brother currently attends UCLA and I have a plethora of friends who’ve graduated from the school.

It all depends on your area of interest and the environment you want to immerse yourself in. Pomona was absolutely the wrong fit for me. I would have been much happier in a larger environment, like UCLA or USC or even somewhere like NYU. I’m just being honest—Claremont kids are generally pretty unattractive and the place will be really boring if you’re more someone who likes an urban, city-like atmosphere.

Pomona kids are, by and large, pretty nerdy. The reason I didn’t feel I fit in was the “WASP” feel I got. While there is a significant minority presence at the Claremonts, I feel they stick to their own kind and the majority hang out in their own respective groups. Big surprise—almost everywhere is like that. Times could have changed within the 5 years I graduated though.

With that said, I feel as if I received a wonderful education there. Pomona is unquestionably one of the finest schools in the nation, and if a small, beautiful campus with dedicated professors is something you’d like, then you shouldn’t even be considering places like UCLA.

Again, it depends on your major. If your focus is more on post-undergrad, Pomona is excellent, as the school has one of the highest acceptance rates for students who apply to graduate schools. I’m telling you very honestly—Pomona is highly respected among graduate schools. But then again, it’s not a secret that many grad schools prefer undergrads with liberal arts degrees.

My brother loves UCLA. I would have too.

My advice is: if you were disappointed by Pomona when you visited, either try visiting again or listen to your instincts. Pomona IS a fantastic school—I’m a very proud alumni and I do believe my Pomona degree was an important factor in my getting accepted to all of the grad schools to which I applied this year. But if I could have done it all over again, I would have attended elsewhere, but only because my interest, film, would have been better served a place like UCLA or NYU.

If you want any more advice on either school, feel free to reply or PM me. I’ll try to help you as much as I can. Good luck!

Nope, sorry. You are completely right. I’m pretty down about it myself.
However, I cannot in good conscience recommend UCLA over Pomona academically with the current state of the UC system, so you will want to consider that.

Thanks LuckyLoki :)
