Pomona board = dead

Nooo! This board is dying! We need to revive it!

I'll just randomly say... I love pomona and i'm deciding between UCLA and Pomona but secretly (or not so secretly i guess) I really want to go to Pomona.
Financial Issues and parents are sort of in the way but I think i know where i'll be next year. Yes!

Anyone else confused?

i'm in the same boat, but i'm leaning towards LA for its social life. I'd really prefer pomona's small classes and opportunities, but i'm just not sure it'll offer me the college experience i want...i mean, it's smaller than my highschool which has 850 people in the senior class alone, and it's also relatively unknown. i know that's not supposed to matter, but it still bugs me wen people think i'm going to cal poly pomona -__- ...so yah. any advice? :D

Yeah it bugs me too. I just say Pomona COLLEGE. And i say, the one in claremont. that works. if not then i give a speech and quote US News.
I visited Pomona last week and what I got from people is that social life isn't bad at all. People just spend a lot more time socializing in dorms. I thnk its sort of a myth that people at UCLA go to Hollywood all the time or that people at Pomona never go to LA. You can get caught up in the bubble of the school no matter where you go. BUt yeah. I also wish Pomona was closer to the city.l

S is graduating from UCLA this spring. In his four years he went to the beach twice, went to a Hollywood premiere once, and went to the mountains (Lake Arrowhead, mostly) five times max. He also felt kind of lost in his GE courses.

Even though the HS is bigger than Pomona, D decided to apply to and attend Pomona because she will be on a campus the size of a small university. She'll also get to make friends from the other four Claremonts. The expansion of Claremont Village will also inject some life into the community.

don't let the fact that pomona isn't the best known school bother you. when i first got in, everyone at my school was like, "justin, i thought you were doing so well, why are you going to a community college?". the way i see it, you shouldn't choose a college for its name value, nor should you let your less-knowledgeable peers affect the way you view your college.

yeah most people that are knowledgable and matter knwo Pomona.
My gov teacher is crazy about it.
If i go there i'll be the first from my school to ever go there. So everyone is pysched. My college counselor is a pomona alumni so she's REALLY excited.

I don't really understand why Pomona is not more well known... but then again, most people don't know Swarthmore either. I live on the east coast and Swarthmore is right outside Philly! I was speaking with someone on the school board and she didn't know Pomona or Swarthmore. Go figure! Based on the rising number of applications though, I would say that it is just a matter of time before a lot more people find out! Kaplan's has Pomona listed as one of its "hot 25" for whatever that's worth! Pomona has to do a better job of raising its profile among the wider population, but hopefully it won't go the Wash U. route! I doubt that it will though... They seem to really know who they are and to be letting the world find out about them without too much marketing. One of these days Pomona will probably sneak ahead of Williams or Amherst on the U.S. News rankings and that will get them a lot of notariety...

My S gets to the beach most weekends with a group. Some friends even have parents that own beach houses they get to use. A one hour drive with a group of friends is not a big deal. There is tons to do on campus and 1st semester noone even wanted to venture out. The school is working on improving its name recognition. Most folks I know have never heard of Amherst, Williams, Swathmore -no big football teams.

Yeah. I think the name recognition is definitely going to improve. I can't wait for the new rankings to come out.
This is really preliminary but I personally compared to other very selective LACs like Amherst, Swarthmore, etc.. and from all of those that have released their admissions statistics, Pomona has the lowest percentage. I think Pomona is like 18.4 and Amherst is 18.6. Not a really big difference but techincally Pomona is harder. ALso, i think Swarthmore and Williams are in the 19-21 range. I'm not a statistics expert but that just made me feel better about getting into Pomona. If this is true, it might raise Pomona's ranking.

pomona and williams both had acceptance rates of 18.4% this year

Unfortunately, acceptance rates bear little importance in a school's "overall score" in USNews. So I wouldn't count on any drastic changes in the near future.

That said, Pomona is an exceptional school, and y'all should be totally psyched about going.

As far as name recognition, I don't think AWS have much more name recognition than Pomona. Few people have heard of any of them. I recently saw a woman in my gym with a T-shirt that said Pomona College on the front, and on the back in big letters was "YEAH, WE NEVER HEARD OF YOU EITHER." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

I was laughing for my entire work out.

What is odd about liberal arts colleges is that the best ones have considerably less name recognition than those in the middle of the pack. For example, Colgate, Bucknell, Vassar etc.. all have way way way more name recognition than WASP.

Most people think Amherst College is U-MASS Amherst.
Pomona? You mean Caly-Poly Pomona.
Swarthmore... Heck I grew up relatively close to Philly, and no one seems to know what Swarthmore is. If they do, they think it's a school for socially dysfunctional lesbians who swing from trees while reading Sylvia Plath.
Williams -- Forget about it. Williams and Mary? Roger Williams? William Patterson?

i hate cal poly pomona for that exact reason.

actually here on the east coast most people know of amherst and williams, and a bunch know swarthmore.

its pomona that many don't know. those who do light up... and i wish it could be april forever, because then i could still pretend i was going there, and say i'm considering it, when really we didn't get any finaid for this school, my first choice =/ probably i will see you all from scripps!

and part of the reason i'm not going to pomona, probably, being from the east coast, is that i didn't want my parents and I to go into debt for a school with so little name recognition because pomona is only marginally more well known than scripps here. the sad thing is they'd probably fork over the money if i had gotten into harvard. =/

Did you appeal Pomona and send them Scripps award? They are quite receptive in fin aid office

The problem is that the Scripps award is merit... so it's a no-go, since Pomona's whole finaid's philosophy is against merit aid, apparently, and they are not comparably selective either..

Well the people that count, whether on the east or west coast, know Pomona and how good of a school it is. That should be a factor at all.
But yeah... My dad was a little hesitant to give money up for pomona. he still is but i think it's all going to be okay. but im SURE he woudln't have thought twice for Stanford or Harvard even if i didnt get any financial aid. oh well

pomona's name recognition, or lack thereof, is kind of scary. the other day someone can into one of my classes from the newspaper staff asking where everyone was going to college, i said, "pomona college" and not only did i have to spell P-O-M-O-N-A, im not even sure if they got that its a college and not university. and on top of that, the next person said they were going to tulane, and someone was like, "ooooooo, Tulane, nice job." i was soooooooooo pi*sed. i asked them why they didnt say anything about pomona and my friend turned to me and reminded me that no one has ever heard of the school....
im just trusting poeple that say that everyone that matters has heard of pomona. crossing my fingers and hoping theyre right.

you know what though? the people that have heard of pomona think of it very highly. that's the trade off. noone will say bad things about pomona becuase the people that might dont even know about pomona. and the people that know pomona, LOVE IT and know how awesome pomona is.

kosuke..hey..i dont know why i came to this board..but well im goin to middlebury..and i have the same problem..i mean it wont keep me out of the school because i love it but i hate when i say middlebury and ppl just look at me like ooo ..like they expected more only because they dont realize middlebury is hot..my mom asked oh yeh is middlebury better than stony brook-suny..i was like *?..so afterwards ill tell ppl well i was accepted to nyu and umich and they're like wow and im thinkin again *..middlebury is better than those two..its kind of irritating..i hope LACS GET THE RECOGNITION THEY DESERVEE!..GAHHHH!

A lot of folks only know Harvard, Our friend from Columbia was applying for a summer job and they asked her if it was a community college. She almost punched them.
