Washington&Lee vs. University of Richmond

I thought dorms at UR were decent as well, but I only seen one.
Yes, the overall “smartness” of the student body is a factor, I want to be surrounded by intelligent people who will be as smart/smarter than I am. But I did not get to talk to many students at either place, so I would not know.

Thank you for your help!!!

I would disagree that study abroad is better at W&L than Richmond. Richmond has a great study abroad program, and more than 65% of its students do it. I believe they were ranked hottest school in the country for study abroad. It may not be possible to do it your freshman year, but doing study abroad that early is not a good idea anyway.

Also, personally, I think the Greek scene at W&L is awfully huge, whereas at Richmond it’s more moderate.

Both schools are beautiful, but I would give the nod to Richmond. I would also say that Lexington might seem a bit small to spend 4 years in.

On the other hand, W&L is slightly more selective and prestigious. It also seems extremely friendly with the speaking tradition.

I don’t get why anyone would want to do study abroad freshman year anyway. Seems like a bad idea to me–interrupt the bonding process with your classmates. I thought they were both lovely schools. It seemed to me that W and L had a slightly more personal touch, on the other hand, Richmond has that Jepson program. W and L is more Southern feeling–URichmond has tons of NY area kids, even though it does have the separate dorms and the ring dance and all of that. But W and L–I mean, what can you say when you see Robert E. Lee’s recumbant figure carved in marble in the chapel, and walk over the remains of his horse? That is Southern with a capital S. Which is actually very charming in its way. Also, the whole cadaver society thing is fascinating. Liked the honor code. I felt that Washington and Lee had a bit more authentic personality, but in a way perhaps hard to take if you aren’t used to that kind of personality. Washington and Lee has that cute little town nearby, and lots of polite cadets who take their caps off to you. U Richmond has a lake in the middle of the campus. You have two great choices!

W&L definitely felt more southern to me, but when I visited for accepted students day, about half the students I met were from nj, a few were from va, one from cali, one from hawaii, and a bunch others, but I think i only met a couple from south of VA. So yes, a more southern feel, but at least based on student representation (of those i met as well as statistical info), students are from anywhere
which did you choose?
