Washington Post takes you inside the UMD Admissions room

I don’t know if CC will let me post the link but the Washington Post has a story today about admissions at UMD. The reporter gets to sit in on the committee as they discuss kids on the bubble. Don’t worry, no names! : )

I’ll try to post the link below, but if I can’t, you can search for the story easily.

Here’s the link:

Awesome post! Thanks for sharing!

After reading that article, seems like kids who attend big Maryland high schools are at a disadvantage (unless they’re in the top). Students are weighed in the admissions process against their classmates.

Kids attending small private schools (with far fewer UMD applicants) seem to have a distinct advantage…

Not really…at a small, private school, it can actually be harder to stand out/compete with classmates who are all potentially competitive. My kids went to a small private middle school. I had no idea how my kids stacked up when all the kids were basically on the same level. It’s only when they went to a huge public high school that I got a sense of their skills compared to their peers.

@maryversity I get what you’re saying. At our small, private HS, we only have about 5-7 UMD applicants per year. Compared with our public HS where there is a senior class of 400 and easily 125+ applicants! I just meant there’s a much higher percentage of admits coming from the tiny class compared to the big one.
