So basically, my choices are coming down between either going to Penn and paying the whole tuition or going to WashU and only paying room and board with tuition covered.

I'm stuck between the two and cant decide. need opinions! thanks

What do you want to study in? Where do you live? Is the money going to put any strain on your parents? Personally, I think full tuition at Wash U sounds like an amazing opportunity and you should take advantage of it. Unless we’re talking Wharton.

wash u. I’m an accepted student visiting and I’m writing this from my host’s dorm room. I was worried about what the people would be like at wash u (nerdy and antisocial), but these guys completely dashed those thoughts. After only about five hours, my decision was solidified. I’m picking wash u over unc, emory, and others. It’s a cool place from what i’ve seen. And if you’re going to have to pay 40k a year extra or 160k total over four years just to go to an ivy, you’re insane. but if that’s really what you want, it’s what you want.

I was in the same boat as of monday, but after visiting washu last weekend and doing extensive research I decided that washu was right for me. I could get a more personal education in terms of advisors and such. I also don’t really want a school where partying is 24/7 I kinda like the option of having a movie night once in a while or something. Also I am going in as pre-med, and even though penn may be ranked higher according to the newly releases ranking I feel like one will be better off with the advising situation and smaller class sizes at washu. Really a couple numbers difference on a ranking system that one should by no means based their decisions on is nothing. I mean 87% of students applying to med school at washu get in, which is a pretty phenomenal number I feel.

The differences in these two schools are too small to pay the extra money.

This might just be the Wash U forum in general but I am so excited for my visit tomorrow. Whoo! I can’t wait to see everything. I don’t have to choose between Wash and Penn but I feel Wash U is close enough for less money, and in some respects, better than UPenn.

im olin for washU, and CAS for penn with a minor in wharton. because I want to get an economics major, which washU allows to double major, but penn offers their tradition econ in CAS.

When you’re looking at schools at the level of Wash U and Penn… go where the money is. You can find similar opportunities and happiness at either. They’re similar in many ways. There’s not going to be a $40,000 x 4 = $160,000 difference in education/quality/life between the two.

I would say the same thing if Penn was giving you full tuition and Wash U was giving you nothing — and I am a relentless Wash U booster!!!

It means nothing when you say a minor in Wharton btw since any Penn student can do one of the minors that are remotely linked to Wharton, even though there is no actual “Wharton minor”.

Wash U!!! Neither school gave me money and I chose Wash U over Penn. I’ve visited both extensively, and I prefer Wash U because honestly the students are so much happier and more involved in their lives. I have a cousin at Penn and, though Wash U academics are equally prestigious, it seems that Penn has an atmosphere that is much more competitive and cut throat.

Social life wise… Philly is definitely cooler than St Louis, but when I talked to students at both schools, they all said that they rarely go into the city and instead stay on campus. I visited Wash U on a Thursday night as a prefrosh and still had a great time at a frat party until 2am. I do agree that there is more partying at Penn, but you can find a good time at Wash U too. Also, I think Penn has more kids who take it to the extreme and drink too much too often.

(don’t mean to offend any Penn students. I love it too, just not as much as Wash U!)
