Watch out, it's an admissions counselor!

Welcome back!!! :)

UofCman, we suppress applicants' writing scores when we read their applications. That is a fact. In this way, they do not come into the admissions process. However, we do not suppress the CR and math scores. So, they are a factor, though a small one.

Hey, Libby, do applicants in Vancouver usually receive an interview? Also, are you planning to come to Vancouver this fall?I wish you can so that I can learn more about U-Chicago.

Oh btw, if I am sending the Nov SAT score for ED, does U-Chicago want it rushed? Thx a lot.

OMG I didn't even realize you were back Libby until I just saw the answer. Thanks a lot for the answer a/b the AA degree. That really helps me out!

Libby: A friend of mine plans on applying to Chicago EA Transfer this coming academic year. He did quite poorly in high school due to problems at home, but has done amazingly in college since. He hasn't taken the SAT and got a fairly low score on the ACT - 25. He would like to know if Chicago would encourage him to take the ACT again (or the SAT), or if it would be too little too late, given that it is designed for high school and he will have two years of college behind him.

Thanks!

hi libby,

my situation is kind of similar to neverborn friend's. i am gonna be applying to transfer to uchicago this fall, and i didn't do good in high school. however, i am now doing...well, not quite so amazing in junior college. my gpa is going to end up being somewhere between 3.0-3.5 (i predict) and my sat score (from the old 1600 version) was a combined 1400.

the thing is, i became a freshman in junior college when i was 14, and i got that score on the sat when i was 12. should i try retaking the sat like uh...right now, i guess it would be, and then rush send them to uchicago? also, does my age (i am 15 now, as i just finished my first year) make my gpa look better or worse? especially since i didn't really i didn't really 'finish' high school...i skipped two grades when i was little, and then after 10th grade i took the chspe, which is a california equivalent of the ged, and so i have the technical equivalent of a high school diploma.

also, i would very much like to have an on campus interview, but i'm only in chicago visiting family from august 16 to around september 1. is there a way for me to get an interview before september 13? or should i try to request an alumni interview around where i live, san diego? or would the interview not really affect my application as much as i feel that it would?

sorry for the many questions. i am not sure if it is because my situation is genuinely unique/confusing/hard to explain or if it is because i am just that flustered (: also i think it is really cool that you would come to these forums and answer people's questions! thanks for what you are doing, it makes uchicago seem that much more appealing.

-ruyi

oh, and i forgot, i took the new version only like...once. i can't remember if i was 13 or 14, but i got a 2060. is that worth sending in?

jdroz32, yes, what high school do you go to??

viva0yue2006, Isabel visited Singapore and China last spring, and will probably do so again this spring.

ruyi, questions like this should be directed to me privately. Anyone who has questions that pertain to their personal situations, please contact me off the board.

mz16, I am planning on coming to Vancouver. What secondary school do you attend?

We never want scores to be rushed. Tests taken before the deadline are valid for the decision process, and we will also look at later scores if we get them. Rushing them actually makes them take longer to process, since they come on paper.

Libby, I go to Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School and it's the only two schools in the greater Vancouver that offer IB program. Come to the school ^__________^ lots of highly-qualified peers have intersts in going to the States, yet they are not that familiar with U-Chicago, which I think is just as good as any IVY. Sorryz, forget to ask if you are going to making a tour of schools or staying at one school.

Libby,

How'd you like Brazil?

P.S.: Brazil's most influent periodical just did a story on Brazil's (lack of) economic growth... it featured 7 nobel prize winners. Two of them (Heckman and Becker) are Chicago faculty members.

Lake Oswego High School

I'm coming to Lake Oswego! This is my first year there. I met one of your counselors at a conference this year and decided to come on over.

I came to Winston Churchill last year and had a great turnout, but funding was the major question. I'm either going to do school visits again in Vancouver, or just do a big info session in the afternoon or evening. I'll let you know.

Libby,

Does U of C look at the highest individual subscores on the ACT, or just the highest composite score? Thanks!

^ Libby, I have the same question. I had high scores in English and Reading, but not so much in math and science, with science being my lowest.

Libby, I can't resist: I love u. of chicago!! My personal happiness hinges on going there!!! Ahh!

Would you mind listing a few of the most important factors in deciding who gets accepted to U-Chi? Thank you!

When will you becoming to Lake Oswego?

Libby,

I screwed up freshman and sophomore year (Cs and Ds), and took a bunch of honors courses (which were mostly Ds and Cs, again). Basically, at the end of sophomore year, I have a 2.7 weighted GPA. If junior year, I get straight A's taking a bunch of AP/Honors courses, I'll end up with a 3.2 cumalitive GPA. As far as class rank goes, I won't be much better than in te top 50% of my class, since my high school (Neuqua Valley High School) is academically strong as a whole. My ACT scores are probably going to be around:

Math: 34
English:34
Reading:30
Science:28-30

I don't have many extra curriculars other than Government and weekly volunteer work. What do you think a general answer is as to whether I can get in or not? I'm kind of worrying my butt off as to whether I can get into this school, and right now it doesn't seem likely. I know that these aren't all the factors that matter in the admissions process, and you can't really give me a "yay or nay" answer, but could you give me some advice on what I can do or where I stand as of now? I'm going to be a junior this school year. Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer our questions! Its greatly appreciated!!! :)

jdroz32, September 29 in the late morning or early afternoon.

averagedesi, I think you already know what you have to do: work hard this next year.

So, the ACT issue is a weird one. For SAT scores, we do recalculate your composite score. For ACT, we see all your highest scores, and we do care when one set of sections is significantly lower than another set. I guess I'd say that the subscores are slightly more important. But remember, test scores are the least important factor for us.
