Hello people on CC,
I am a little confused/need explanation on the different ways to apply to Tulane. I understand what EA and SCEA are, but I am wondering about the different applications, like the free application. The Pros/Cons of each would be great and also what they include essay-wise. I would just like to clear everything up. I would also like to know which, if any, applications (including EA and SCEA) would give me the best chance at merit aid. I'll post my quick stats if that helps:
UW GPA: 3.62- big upward trend since freshman year (3.87 UW 2nd Semester Junior Year)
ACT: 33 Composite (34 Super-scored)
APs: APES, AP EURO, APUSH, APLAC, AP Calc AB/ Senior Year APs: Calc BC, Econ (Macro and Micro), AP Lit and comp?, AP Physics.
Typical ECs: double Varsity sports, volunteering, etc
Thanks (any info is greatly appreciated)

Tulanes application is always free. Just make sure you complete the “optional” essay: Why Tulane. It’s not really optional. They are not only looking for stats but for people that really want to be there. Showing interest by completing that essay and visiting or attending a Tulane in Your Town event are very important. Keep in touch with your admission rep (but don’t be a pest).

Good luck!

To the best of my knowledge, there are only 2 ways to apply to Tulane, and they are both free. The Universal Application and Tulane’s own. I believe they are identical in terms of essays (2 essays, a “Why Tulane” which is not really optional, and a personal statement) and all other info. You can apply EA or SCEA using either one, I believe.

While merit awards are primarily stat based, other factors do play a role. EA, and more so SCEA, can only help your chances at a better merit award. At worst it is neutral for merit but positive for your chances of admission. As far as you getting merit, I think you would get an offer. Your strong ACT will help a lot. Your GPA is not super high for merit, but it is good and as you say, much better after freshman year. And you already have a lot of AP courses and some challenging ones this coming year, also a big plus.

So unless there is a hiccup in the parts of your app we cannot see, namely the essays and the recs, you look like a very good fit for Tulane. With the Tulane essay, just try to avoid cliches and generic statements, like Tulane is such a great school with strong academics. Of course that is true, but write something that shows you have really looked into the place. Good luck!

@fallenchemist I was waiting for you to post :). Thanks for all the info. It really helps clear things up. I am visiting Tulane in the school year so I can get a feel of the campus and student body.

@randomstudent15 - Sounds like a plan!
