I'm from Alaska, and while I don't have terrific grades (3.08) due to lack of motivation and, I'll admit, plenty of slacking on my part, I've fallen hard for Rice. Do you think playing the "Alaska angle" will have much of an impact on my admissions?

Well, I don’t know how much it will help, but yes, being from Alaska will likely be a plus in your admission. There was a poster from Alaska a few years ago who matriculated at Rice and his GPA was a little lower than others.

While it’s true that being from Alaska is in your favor, I doubt that Rice (or any other very selective university) will be interested in a slacker.

greennblue is right. Alaska will give you a small bump, like if you were tied with another Houston, TX applicant they would pick you. On the other hand, the 3.85 GPA with good stats from TX will probably beat you to it.

Apply and see. Noone here can tell you! ;)

^ Agree with anxiousmom. But I would wait for RD round, so that you can improve your senior grades and wipe out the slacker image.

can you see russia from your front porch? Definitely reference that somewhere on your app. Good sense of humor can make any essay reader thankful I imagine!
