We need a short list of colleges that have programs similar to Marshall’s College Program for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. My is not ready for his dream school yet. He wants a typical college experience, with parties, fraternities and all that goes with it. All I can come up with is Marshall University College Program for Students with ASD. We need a few more all embracing programs. He disliked Mansfield and Landmark. They were just too much support. His profile is: ASD Aspergers Accounting , math kid, matrix planning 99%.
I have a friend whose child did the PLUS program at Muskingum University. They loved it and successfully launched.
My understanding is that they have four levels of support depending on a student’s need.
What about U of Arizona’s SALT program?
Mercyhurst University has their AIM program, which I’ve heard great things about.
Have you taken a look at the colleges with autism supports listed here? Colleges with Strong Learning Support Services Several of the schools have multiple layers and types of support.
ETA: Here are two other links that I think might be helpful:
This isn’t a college…but it’s a supportive living environment in Burlington VT. We know a Champlain student who has found this to be a perfect match for his needs.
I think this is the most recent list. Most run 3k-6k/year in addition to COA. Many schools also have an LLC dorm for the program. How is he doing with self advocacy and EF skills? Do you think he needs the full ASD program or would he be ok with strong ADA and Academic Support offices?
On Your Marq at Marquette University.
Milgymfam, Thank you Mercyhurst is on my list. I have read that they have Individual coaching, peer mentoring, social and fitness opportunities (my son is really into fitness). He also likes boxing. I have read they they have has a major in Intelligence which plays right into his wheelhouse. (Matrix Planning is 99%). Thank you for your recommendation. CC
AustenNut, Thank your for the very good links! I checked them both out last night. Lots of good suggestions and overlaps. My list is building! I may consider using an educational consultant that has some knowledge of all these programs. Clearly this is a full time job.
Thumper1, We toured Mansfield, UVM, Champlain in the Fall. My son really was not interested in their supports. I think he wants to live on campus and have the typical experience. He needs to come to terms with what individual support he will need. Mansfield seemed over reaching to him. Much to our disappointment, because we thought it would be perfect. He did fall head over-heels for Champlain though! UMV gave a great tour too and talked about accommodations. Both tours made us feel very comfortable. Burlington is my new favorite place now!
2plustrio, adding to my list. Thanks!
I’m glad someone else here has experience with Mansfield. It certainly could be an option for some students.
Augsburg in Minneapolis.
They have accounting, real estate, Operations and Supply Chain. New business building opening this fall. Boxing club with others nearby. D1 Basketball is the biggest sport though. Fraternities. Midwest nice.
Are you referring to Augsburg?
Sorry, no Marquette
In reading a different thread there was this link that I think might also be a good resource. It details the types of services for students with autism at each of about 170 universities, including whether there’s an additional fee.
Great thread, I was pointed here by @2plustrio. Won’t be helpful for OP but for others who may be exploring these options, Beacon College in FL is similar level of support to Landmark, small college all LD focused. I am looking mostly at that level of support for one of my twin D24’s but also scouting programs like Marshall’s in the mid-Atlantic where we live, and FL where I am from and have a lot of local family.
On my list for similar programs to Marshall that have not yet been mentioned:
Nova Southeastern (Access Plus)
U of West Florida (Argos Autism Program)
Lynn University (IAL, academic support only)
George Mason University (Autism Support Initiative)
St. Joseph’s University (ASPIRE, also has summer program for HS students that would be prospective ASPIRE candidates)
Drexel (Autism Support Program)
And forgot to note that Mercyhurst AIM program already mentioned has a summer program for potential candidates called CREATE. Good luck to all on this thread and keep us posted how your kids are doing
