We received a strange call from "Michigan" the other day

On Saturday, my DD, who is applying to Michigan, received a call on her cell phone from someone asking to talk to me, her dad. (I’m an alum) The person claimed that they were from the university. We have no idea why they were calling, and after talking with the admissions department today, they said no one called from there.

Has anyone else received a call such as this? Should we be concerned that someone has her information, such as her cell phone number, and that she was applying to the university?

A University of Michigan number called me today, I couldn’t pick up at the time and they didn’t leave a voicemail. When I googled the number, an old tweet from the university came up telling applicants to look for a call from that number because they were releasing decisions that way. The tweet was from 2012 but it had replies from applicants from 2019 and 2020 saying they had received the call. I’m a deferred EA applicant, I submitted my mid-year grades, and there was no update on my portal so I’m just confused and wondering if anyone got a similar call? Does it mean anything?

If not a fundraiser, alumni association or financial aid… Just guessing here. Why not call your phone provider or look up the number online on the provider site? Phone calls to your home will be listed. Then you can track it and decide to call it back. Just an idea.

Probably a scam. Best to avoid calling the number as it could lead to charges on one’s monthly phone bill if it is a scam.
