weather at Vassar

I live in south Texas, so I'm used to pretty mild winters. 50 degrees is considered very cold, and our schools close if it snows half an inch. That being said, I think I could survive a New York winter, but I've never experienced anything like it, so I can't really make any accurate predictions. Is the weather bearable in Poughkeepsie? I know it gets very snowy and has long winters, but is it as bad as it sounds?

Oh, winters are bad … very bad. Two or three times a year massive blizzards will dump 15 feet of snow, marooning you in your dorm with no way of getting out for a week. And when you finally do, you have to keep a sharp lookout for hungry, marauding polar bears. Each year Vassar loses a couple of unwary students to them. And to make things even more depressing, in midwinter the sun comes up around 11 AM, barely stays above the horizon for a couple of hours, then plunges the campus into darkness again by 1PM. And did I mention the cold? At minus 30 degrees, exposed flesh will start to freeze in 5 minutes, so you’ll have to either dress very warmly and carefully, or ski as fast as you can to class!

Love it! Best post of the day. :D

Sometimes I just have wonder …

Poughkeepsie is pretty typical of the NE. It can get below zero and have a lot of snow, but not every winter is that bad. A good winter coat, hat, gloves and boots are a must. You will appreciate spring more than ever.

hey Lector,
You left out the part about the cabin-bound students having to eat each other to stay alive.
