Hi everyone. I am an international student (Italy) and next year I will be in my last year of school. This means I have to start thinking where I want to be.
I always wanted hot weather - I'm applying to universities in California, mostly. The thing is I have always been attracted to UPenn - I don't really know why, but..
So how's the weather there? Does it get very cold? How about summer? How much does the winter last? Does it snow?

I know these are silly question, but I have problems with rain, snow weather like these.

Philadelphia’s weather is reflected by much of the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States - you get extremes during summer, winter and spring, fall are moderate.

Typically the weather is very nice from the start of school until around mid or end of October. That’s when it starts to get a little chilly. Winter lasts until March. Now, from year to year, snow accumulation definitely varies. My freshman year in 2009-2010, we got two huge snowstorms. The rest of the time I was at Penn, there was barely any snow. However, it is typically pretty cold and windy. The worst is when it is cold rain combined with wind.

The weather starts to get nice again around March and it’s perfect just in time for April (think Spring Fling and all of the outdoor festivities). It really only gets hot at the end of May into June, but unless you’re staying on campus, you won’t have to experience the horror that are July/August on the east coast (think humid and thunderstorms at 30 degrees Celsius and above)

California weather is definitely nicer, but I wouldn’t suggest choosing your college based on the climate. That should be one of many factors, and a minor one at that.

Yes, expect cold weather from November through March-ish. Also, snow here and there…a LOT about a week ago but that’s not too typical.

Philadelphia experiences a humid subtropical climate, but that just means that the temperature is above freezing 12 months of the year. In the summer (which lasts from late May to sometime in September), temperatures are generally in the 80s and 90s with high humidity. The winters (late November to early March) have temperatures generally in the 40s during the day, with significant swings from that in either direction. Some winters have plenty of 50-degree days, while others (like this one) seem to struggle to get into the 30s with regularity. The fall and spring are moderate, with temperatures between the other extremes.

I know i should not decide the college based on the weather, but one of the reason I want to go to the USA is the weather. I really really really have problems with snow, rain and wind so…
Besides, I think I do not have the scores to get into UPenn and also it offers only the BA in cog sci, and I want a BS.

This has not been a good year for winter weather anywhere in the eastern US. No one distinguishes between BA and BS in something like cognitive science.

Especially if you want to get into, let’s say, med school. If you were applying to PhD programs, the somewhat greater depth of BS requirements might matter some. Medical schools pretty much don’t care about depth beyond meeting their minimum requirements, and to some extent actually prefer students with broader educations and interests.
