Webster University

Wishing your S much luck...break a leg. Keep us posted.

That is exactly where my D auditioned. Chicago Unifieds. We had a wonderful time. Then we visited Webster (and a few others) after the acceptance letters came. We did Unifieds for the very same reason you stated.

Break a leg! And take snacks with you to Unifieds, sometimes you don't have time for lunch. We stayed on the concierge floor so we could run up for snacks, juice, etc. It was more expensive but worth it.

i know this might be a little redundant, but what exactly goes on at the webster audition? i will be applying next year and am very excited. i will be apllyin to the directing program, which requires a monolouge or two i think. i think this is a pretty cool concept, because directors do need to know what theyre talking about. anywho, and tips advice, personal experience?

I'm planning on transferring to the Conservatory next year - that is if I'm accepted (crosses fingers!)

I was wondering if you knew what your sons used as musical pieces at the audition?

5pants, I believe you have sons attending Webster. I have a few questions, and I know they are probably busy with it all, but is there any way I can get some questions to them? Or maybe you can answer some?

I've been reading this thread for about a year now, and the fact that my dream for Webster might be becoming a reality is incredible to me.

~Zach

Zach,

Just read your post. I will see if Alex and Nathan will contact you. They would be better at answering questions than me at this point. I am too far removed from the whole process...but continue to check in now and then to support those like you in the process and occaisional updates.

Stay tuned.... :)

Campus

Could anyone tell me anything about the campus, some of the buildings look a little farmhouse/run down from the pictures, but everyone says they have great facilities... would anyone decribe the campus for me?

Ronit, I am sure someone will jump in that actually has a child attending, but below find a link to some facility pictures from Webster's web site. I am not sure if you have seen these (the link tot their performing arts program is not all that easily found):

Conservatory Facilities

Hi, Ronit,

I generally am hesitant to jump in, but I thought I would give this one a shot. One of the elements of Webster that I think is "ok" is the fact that we have five specifically designated studios available for our performance training program and that excludes our "Stage III" a sort of off-Broadway, but well equipped space for our Directing Program. We share other spaces with The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis and I expect you would find them more than adequate. I do not know what you might be looking for in terms of facility support, but do take a look at the photos. I believe we do quite well....and I am not including the music spaces. I hope this helps.

Since others have already addressed the theatre facilities, I won't repeat. Instead I'll try to provide some general campus "look" info.

Here's another link that might help. Halfway down page on the right is a box which says: tour Webster (click on it and you can see some slide shows)

Webster University :: Prospective Students

I don't know exactly what you mean by farmhouse/rundown, LOL; some of the buildings are very old, that's true, but they are quite historic and I find them architecturally beautiful. These older buildings really accentuate the charm and beauty of the campus. I (think) one of them (music building, perhaps, is actually listed in historic register). The campus is small, and definitely eclectic -- it's not like one of those ivy-covered campuses where everything matches!

Emerson Library is stellar (I'm a person who loves books); if I was a student I'd probably want to spend all my time there. Two of the dorms are basically brand new (opened Fall 2006); the other two dorms have just been renovated (so they are probably like brand new as well). The on-campus apartments, while not new, are nicely kept up.

Hope this helps a little! :)

I love the campus! It reminds me of an updated village out of a Norman Rockwell painting. I don't really remember any run down farmhouse looking buildings but I do agree with BIGismama about that beautiful Library! Nothing run down about those theatre/dance spaces either they are fantastic. I hope you get a chance to visit.

thanks everyone. i don't remember where i saw the pics, but the ones you sent were much better, thanks for the input!

D auditioned at Webster yesterday, and really enjoyed the process. From a parent's perspective, it's worth noting that the information sessions with the Fine Arts dean and the admissions person were the most informative, honest and direct that we've heard. The admissions guy (I wish I could remember his name!) had every fact at his fingertips regarding Webster, and also provided a wealth of overall valuable information regarding stuff like how colleges actually use the FAFSA forms, why it's valuable to fill them out even if you don't think you'll get any financial aid, how to avoid feeling pressured if schools ask for acceptance decisions early (a problem I hope we have...), etc.

Also, if you are planning audition visits next year, I recommend doing it on a Friday if possible. Our daughter got to sit in on a class, and there were only about 12 kids auditioning, vs. maybe double or triple that on a weekend day.

My son auditioned in Chicago, and the staff at Webster were so attentive. I enjoyed the conversations that I had in the waiting room. He said it was one of his best auditions ever. Good luck everyone

momsonfaith -- so glad to hear your son had a great Webster audition experience!

Does anyone know how the surprise resignation of President Meyers two weeks will be affecting the school? I know they have a re-accreditation coming up.

The Journal

Guitardad

My impression is that Webster is a well regarded university with a wide range of strong points, and I'd be surprised if the resignation of the president (as abrupt and somewhat strange as it was), would have any effect on accreditation. I work at a university (U. of Colorado, Boulder) that has seen numerous and often awkward changes in presidents in recent years, and it appears that that has had little impact on how the school as a whole is perceived by the broader community.

I am an academic - presidentts and provosts come and go

i am planning to visit the campus soon and will be seeing a production of the cripple of inishmaan, going on a tour, class, but i was wondering if there is anything else i should really see or do while im there.

Greetings,

The previous comments concerning the Presidential transition are valid and helpful. The Interim President is the Executive VP and VP for Academic Affairs. He is an incredible advocate for The Conservatory and the Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts. The transition has been seamless and the University is in great shape. I do agree the announcement was unexpected, but our leadership team is very strong and the outlook is quite positive.

The Interim President will serve through the 2008 - 2009 year.

Again, thank you for your comments.

Plaidman

My son and I will be visiting Webster later this month for his interview for theatre tech/design. We will be able to see the performance of The Cripple of Inishmaan and possible a jazz ensemble concert. We are scheduled for a campus tour. I thought we could also spend a day in Forest Park. Does anyone have any other suggestions for what we should see in the area? How about hotels? The Webster web site lists several hotels, but I am hoping to not rent a car and just use public transportation and cabs if necessary. Would we be better off staying closer to Forest Park? Thanks for any suggestions. We are looking forward to our trip!
