I have heard some rumors about a prevalence of drugs at Reed. How true is this, and, more importantly, is there a social scene outside of alcohol and drugs for someone who's not interested in that?

Yes, there is drug and alcohol use. Hopefully someone will post a link to the ongoing studies about it, which helps explain that people at Reed think everyone does more drugs than they actually report doing -- that is, it's largely perception, not fact.

That said, there's a substance-free dorm/hall, and my Reedie has said that there are a range of views on the matter, and like most things, people seem to be okay finding their place on that spectrum. At this fall's orientation, some parents did seem to be really freaked out about it, though.

Here's the link to the perceived and actual data:

Other pages (up one level) cover many other aspects of life at Reed.

Well, if we both end up at Reed we can be non-druggies together. :)
