weighted /unweighted GPA

we have a 3.35 unweighted GPA- someone told me that the colleges get the unweighted GPA- is this correct? I have a junior 3.35 GPA and a 32 ACT- takes a couple ADV/AP and will do same next year -makes all A's and high B's-class rank is 145/343- at a HS where many kids take ALOT of AP/ADV classes-

You will have to look at your high school’s transcript. Our high school transcipt shows course grades unweighted and then gives both an unweighted and a weighted GPA. Some colleges will use the unweighted GPA, some will use the weighted GPA and some will weight the GPA using their own systems. In schools that weight the GPA and report a rank - that is likely to be the most important piece of information to the colleges.

Some schools show both. My school, for instance, gives the unweighted followed by the weighted and the rank is based on the weighted. Just ask for a personal transcript and see what it says on there.

just looked again- she has a weighted 89.25 UW-89.76 UW GPA is 3.35

It doesn’t look too good compared to some of the ones that i read about on here

CC is not a cross-section of normal college bound students. A lot of the students/parents represent high achievers and seekers of ivy league etc. Your daughter’s GPA could be higher, but heck it could be a lot lower too. Her 32 ACT is quite good! Encourage her to try the SAT as well.

Whew!! Thhat makes me feel alot better- we are Def not ivy league material but want to go to a nice smaller school- going to check out Rollins, Stetson and Eckerd Now I won’t worry as much over spring break…

Did you mistype? I don’t think an unweighted average can be more than a weighted one. In any event a B+ is not a bad GPA. With a 32 ACT she should have plenty of choices.

An 89.25 is equivalent to a 3.35? My children’s private school grades on a 100 point scale, but the top grade in some subjects is a 90-92. I think the highest GPA in any given grade is a 92 or 93. I really think that it depends on the school and GPA is less critical than class rank, especially in schools without grade inflation.

it says weighted 100.0+ 89.25
unweighted 100.0 89.7647 4.0 3.3529-
I was told by counselor that we have to figure out the weighted GPA by hand- but college counselor says they will do it at end of year

I have no idea how all of this works- this is my 1st one… anyone have an idea?

hlsess - Most college things I see look at 4.0 scale… but of course differernt schools handle weighting differently. If your school has Naviance (online history of accepts/rejects for your high school vs various colleges), that is a great resource

PS - keep watch on this thread… it shows value of that 32 ACT score

hlsess, I don’t understand those numbers at all, I think you need to talk to your GC about them because they make no sense to me.

agree with mathmom…those numbers make no sense…on a number of levels…

most glaringly: your UW is higher than your wieghted
and an 89.? average being a 3.3…

If his average was a skinch higher, and a 90 would he have had a 3.7? too much gap built in there…makes no sense…

I will call GC on Monday and try to figure this out

Whatever the GPA turns out to be for your child, the relevant comparison is to other students at your school, whether it ranks or not. At some schools, a 3.7 GPA might be only the top 25% of students, eg., for that school, while at others, that would be only the top 10%! I ignore what people say on CC for what constitutes a “good” GPA and look at our Naviance to gauge my kids’ chances.
