Weird FAFSA/CSS question...

Hey guys,

So, I googled this for a bit and could not find any definitive answers. Was wondering if anybody could help me clear things up. Here's the situation:

My biological parents have been divorced for quite a while and I am currently in my dad's custody. He remarried about over a year ago. However, my step-mother is not a U.S. citizen and does not live in the U.S. How do I go about filling out her info when FAFSA/CSS asks for things like ssn or tax form used? Sorry in advance if this seems like a redundant question. Do I just leave blanks? I'm not too sure what to do here.

Thanks :)

You may want to take this question directly to FAFSA and CSS.

Be prepared to supply information such as:
Where your dad and stepmom live (together? not together? in the US? in another country?)
Your dad’s US citizenship status
How your dad is filing his US taxes (married filing separately? married to a non-resident who chooses to be treated as a US resident for tax purposes? married to a non-resident who chooses to not be treated as a US resident for tax purposes? another option?)

If your dad is a citizen and is living outside the US, he is obligated to file a federal US tax return each year. Chances are, he doesn’t owe any US tax, but he is obligated to to the paperwork. Whether his non-citizen, non-permanent resident wife files US taxes with him is essentially up to her. You may want to read up on this a bit at [Internal Revenue Service](http://www.irs.gov)

Wishing you all the best.

I believe you need to report your dad’s spouses income and assets in American dollars on the forms. Re: what you put for her SS number (since she doesn’t have one)…that is a question to ask the FAFSA/Profile folks.

BUT it doesn’t MATTER where your dad’s spouse lives. If he is married, the spouses income MUST be reported on both the FAFSA and Profile…in American dollars. I’m not well versed on this but I also believe there is some way to indicate the taxes the spouse paid to HER country.
