Do I stand a chance? I wish I CODded a bit less during grade 6-10!

It depends which pool you are applying, I mean are you international or dmoestic student? Again it’s MIT, so it is unpredictable, noone is able to chance you… Keep this in mind, noone. However, you grades and scores are good, like most applicants do. Everything depends on your personality, which can be conveyed through your essays.

Good luck!

Thanks! But did you notice I got the 1.1s and even 0.5 GPAs during grade 6-10, my conditionally promoted status, do these things kill my chances? Can 1 amazing essay really save that?

Maybe? What caused the massive change?

When I suddenly realized oh, I have a 0.5 GPA. Thats not good.

wrobbie, yes I’m sure the most important thing is your personality. Also you showed your academic readiness through SAT Subjects. Maybe you could write in essays why did you got such GPA? They could understand you…

How did you get a .5 GPA? No offense, but that is low to be really weird. It means you must’ve failed six or seven of your classes with an F!

It’s a pretty big jump, from a .5 GPA to a 4.3.

Something you might want to say is in the optional section at the end - give a reason for this, or (if it’s true) some awe inspiring story of pushing yourself from a .5 GPA to a 4.3

Hi robbie. Since nobody can truly chance you for MIT, and since you are such a different case, I don’t think you should really take anything that people post as fact. None of us are admissions readers, and none of us have read your essays, teacher recs, etc. If you would like to go to MIT it is a good idea to apply, and in your situation I don’t think anybody could say that you have 0 chance. However:

Which country are you from? I think this matters for MIT more than for other schools, perhaps. China vs. Germany vs. Canada vs. India might all be different.

“math olympiad champion 2012 and 2013” Does this mean that you won the international math olympiad? Your country’s? Your region’s? Your school’s?

“robotics competition 3rd runner up” Same as above. Did you place in an international or big national tournament, or a more local one?

In your case your ECs and accolades are very important, since (obviously) your stats alone will not gain you a spot in the class.

Im from UK wales

Actually the situation is like this *I’ll be speaking in American terms

When I was Grade 6, I was preparing for GCSEs and I completely screwed up the school internal tests, I mean I literally got fails everywhere, D this one, F that one. I call that GPA a 0.5 - 1.0

That continued for 2 years, until the real GCSEs I got

A
A
A
A
A
B
B
B

Ok that was GCSEs

And then bout two years ago I started IB, again I screwed up the first 2 semesters of work, Basically I BLoody failed everything!

Then I realized man thats not a good GPA. I studied. and I got As in everything. Took the American SAT, APs too, went out better than expected!

So do I as an international student have a garbage Cumulative GPA now? Do I still stand a chance despite my GPA?

wrobbie:
What you’ve conveyed is that you’re capable of doing the work, but not always motivated to until the D’s and F’s hit you in the face.

How will you convince the MIT adcoms that your up/down cycle is behind you and that your results will be more consistent - similar to most others who are applying?

I’ll make sure I explain the situation in my essays. In fact, can I get creative, and attach a video, or write an extra essay to explain this?

Great advice btw!

Do you mean I still stand a slight chance?

Keep in mind that only your grade 9 through 12 should be reported. American colleges do no look at earlier grades.

And your personality is not the most important thing. But do read the MIT website and admissions blog to get some perspective on what are important things.

You say Wales here but Central Asia elsewhere?

Central Asia? Where did I say that?

We don’t know. You’ve been pretty vague about what your situation was.

I initially thought it was a brag thread. Then I scrolled down and saw your GPA… Wow… I slack off in school too but not THAT bad.
If you have a good reason for why your GPA was so low, MIT will hear it. If it’s just “I was a hip youngster,” they won’t. Best of luck, and yeah this is a really weird situation.
By the way, I thought it was weird how you had such high CR/writing SAT scores until you said you are from England…

I’m not sure how the grade conversion works but if those grades from a US high school then you would have a ~2.5 high school gpa which is very likely to be disqualifying.
