Welcome Class of 2022! :) Ask questions about BC here!

@IceIceCornell Thank you for the insight! I really am not familiar with the east coast, but your reply helped a lot!

Does anyone know how generous BC is with financial aid? I haven’t received mine yet, but I am in no way able to afford the sticker price. Our household income is <$80k, can I expect to get a lot of help?

Hello, My son is planning to join this year in BC. We are from Dallas belongs to Indian origin. Is there a good Indian community in BC? We respect all cultures and my son can mingle with all groups. As a parent I wanted to check the presence of Indian community in BC. Are there any good Indian clubs in BC where my son can participate and connected to the cultural links? Thank you

Hello, I’m also considering BC. I’m coming from Iowa the midwest. Can anyone give any insight into the distance and being away from home. I love BC went to a camp there for 3 weeks just want to make sure it has a family feel. Thank you

Wow this overwhelms me!! I know she likes the girls she’s living with soph year but are they really ready to commit that early firvjinior?!

Does anyone have photos of the rooms in Vandy? Specifically do they have the wall shelves built in like they have on Newton campus??

How diverse is BC. It’s one of the choices for my son.He talked to someone in BC & feels he will not fit in with Jesuit
Culture. He has lot of white catholic & Jewish friends so doesn’t think going to AHANA weekend will serve the purpose. He wants be there during a normal week. Are there overnights available?

@immomtoone I live in Vandy. There are no wall shelves. Check out the link below for a 3D layout of every room type at BC, including locations where you’d find such a room–the most common ones in Vanderslice are 8-person, 4 bedroom suite-style rooms.

@mg29409 Thanks! My daughter will be living there next year. She’s coming from Newton which, while has the bus drawback, is at least blessed with a lot of walk shelving. I told her to go over and ask th girls in the room currently if she can check it out! she heard there’s less closet space too. What are your suggestions for room storage? One of her friends at a diff school bought a shelf thing that goes over the bed like a headboard. Also, can the beds be lofted? On newton the have the dressers under the bed. Thanks for your reply. Mom questions lol. Trying to plan ahead!

@aleg - the President of BC is an Iowa native - you will be in fine company at BC! My son is far from home (we live in Houston) and he is so happy to be a BC 2021 student. One of his forced triple roommates is from Southern California, and he has a bunch of friends from Wisconsin. I think it helps if 1 of your parents or guardians can make the Parents Weekend trip (last weekend in September) - it is a good 5 weeks or so after drop off and it is nice to see family then. Also, I hope you would be able to fly home for Thanksgiving - no classes on Wednesday, and my son’s Tuesday late afternoon class was canceled by the professor early in the semester so he knew he could jump on a Tuesday afternoon flight back to Texas for Thanksgiving. Hope you decide to attend BC!

@Ramesh12 There are so many affinity groups at BC. I just searched Boston College Student Clubs and saw 2 clubs that may meet your need. I encourage you to google Boston College Student Clubs with your admitted student and search the list together to see the huge variety offered.

My daughter is considering attending BC but it is the largest school she applied to - all of her other choices are less than 4500 students (undergraduate). She loves the idea of being near a city but BC may not be the right fit because of the size. We are visiting this weekend but I am concerned BC is going to be too large for her as she is quiet and not especially outgoing. Add to this the I’m not crazy about the housing at Newton requiring a bus ride to campus. I’d love feedback about this in regards to whether those students who live at Newton feel it makes it more difficult to “connect”. Thanks!

@Notknot77098 Thank you so much that information is helpful.

@goingback2cali my daughter lived on Newton and she loved it. The kids bond a lot on Newton. I also went to BC and lived on Upper. I think my daughter’s experience on Newton was more of a community feel. The bus is no big deal at all. She is a junior now studying abroad and has loved every year at BC. She is very happy in all regards, especially socially!! Don’t be scared of Newton…ends up being better in the end, in my opinion.

@goingback2cali if your daughter is quiet and not especially outgoing then Newton is the better place for her. The RA’s do a great job planning weekly bonding activities that are smaller groups. Plus seeing familiar faces in the dining hall (Stu) and on the bus makes it easier for the quieter kids to make friends. Yes the bus can be a pain in the rain/snow but they get used to it and it actually makes them study more when they have time between classes but not enough time to go back for a nap. Absolutely do not worry about Newton.

@goingback2cali My twin sons have BC in the final three schools. We are going Sunday and also went to a local alumni and student reception in Jan. Three of four students on the panel lived on Newton as freshman, liked it and said the food was better. One of my sons said I seem more concerned about Newton than they do! Our initial visit last summer was the first I’d heard of the two campuses.

Another Newton perk…they can study in the Law School classrooms at night. My daughter is a serious student (and a party girl…she doesn’t sleep!) and when she became a sophomore and lived in Walsh (which she also loved) she said she sometimes wished she could go back to Newton to study because it was so quiet and convenient. She also loved Stuart, the dining hall and missed that.

I also have a friend who was an RA on Newton. She lived with me on Upper way back. Anyway, she said if she could do it all over again, she would live on Newton because of the close knit community it is.

Also, if you are on Newton, you won’t get a forced triple.

@goingback2cali My daughter is a freshman and lives on Newton. I think for the kids there’s an element of we love to hate Newton  but really it’s fine. I’m not sure where you are from/if your daughter is used to public transportation but the BC buses don’t feel like public transportation so it’s nothing to worry about.

If your daughter is on the quieter side, Newton is all freshmen and I think there is a benefit to that. The first week or two, they are all ‘new’ and walk into a freshman dining hall at Stuart and don’t have to ‘worry’ about upperclassmen. Ditto for the bus. They get on and it’s all freshman (well from Newton to Main). My daughter says that Stuart (The dining hall) is great because the staff actually gets to know the kids!

As for size of the school itself, I went to BC grad, so have a different perspective, but it doesn’t feel big. Also the campus is beautiful and access is easy to get into Boston but you also feel ‘away from it all’ if that makes sense.

Also, it’s not a guarantee she would be on Newton/ I believe the % is 60 main 40 Newton.

But if on Newton, as @keepmecruisin mentions in a way it makes the kids focus more and study. My daughter leaves Newton just before her first class and stays on Main till around 5. She has a study schedule and isn’t distracted by the idea of going back to her dorm as she says other kids do! In fact, she’s already commented that next year when living on Lower, she’s going to have to stick to her library plan!

And as @collegemomjam said, the kids on Newton study in the law school classrooms at night and on weekends. My daughter has loved that!

So bottom line, I wouldn’t worry about living on Newton! And hope you enjoy your weekend visit! IT’s a great place!

Thank you all - I feel much better about the Newton possibility! We’ll be at admitted students day on Sunday and she will get a better feel if it is too large. We attended one today that was probably the perfect size for her - around 3500 students, so it will be a great contrast - which she may like? or may not? I appreciate all your comments - we are from Southern California - so it is far from home - which she may or may not like  . We are excited to visit!

@goingback2cali enjoy admitted students day on Sunday! Def will be nice to see and compare to the school you visited yesterday! I messaged you if you have any other questions. And being that you are from SoCA, don’t let the weather this weekend sway you….it’s spring in Boston! Def different but from what my daughter says of her new CA friends, they are liking the four seasons and have had fun in the snow lol.
