A warm welcome to any new parents of incoming freshman. My D is just finishing her sophomore year and I am happy to answer any questions that you might have. Scripps is a wonderful place so congratulations!

How do I get info on meal plans? It doesn’t seem like the 16/19 meal plan and $160 will really cover all the meals for a semester because my daughter likes to eat breakfast. Also can we get the student discount for buying a computer and software now, and if so, how, and if not, when? Thanks for any guidance!

CAorBust- I’ve had the 19-meal plan the last 2 years. It works out fine, and I eat breakfast religiously (it’s my favorite meal). On weekends they serve brunch instead of breakfast & lunch, so it works out that their are only ever 3 meals/week when I either use the flex money to get into the dining hall, or I eat at the Motley, or buy challah on Fridays when they sell it in seal court.

My D had the 16 meal plan the first year and we found it was too little for her so we upped it to the 19 this year which has worked much better. I will say that she does still need to spend money on food which was adding up so we decided to purchase a small fridge for her room. Trader Joe’s is within walking distance so now she buys food there each week to supplement and it keeps the costs down. Also, there is a great Farmer’s Market on Sunday which she goes to to purchase fresh fruit. My sense is that it takes a few weeks for the students to figure out how best to use their meals and flex dollars but then it works just fine. I understand your concern though, it is a different plan than the one my S is on at his school, for example, where you can eat up to 8 times a day! Let me look into the computer for you. My D did not get hers through the school.

CA or Bust: I just got off the phone with the Huntley Bookstore. They told me that they only sell to students and the discount is what they call “academic pricing.” They pointed out to me that this same discount is available to all students at any Apple store if your D is purchasing an Apple. It is about $200 less than retail. If you interested in a different brand you can purchase it online from the Bookstore at any time and they will either ship it to you or hold it for you. Hope this helps.

Revbon50, thanks so much for the welcome and for starting this thread.

We are so happy our daughter chose Scripps.

We went to the campus last weekend to walk around since my husband had not seen it before, and to buy the sweatshirt:) A friend who is a student there very kindly showed us her dorm room and where she’ll be living next year-both really beautiful.

I’m so glad to hear that the Trader Joe’s is within walking distance. Now if there’s a Target not too far away, my daughter will be ecstatic.

Welcome and Congrats! There is a Target not too far away. When we moved my D in we drove there and bought a small fridge and so other items. Also, my D does not have a car but has found that many of her friends do so it is not very hard to get a ride to the grocery store or Target. If you have had a license for a year you can also rent a zip car. My D has found though that many of needs can be taken care of just by walking into the village.

revbon50, thank you for the information!

50isthenew40, buying the sweatshirt was the first order of business for my daughter too!
