Welcome to the New Musical Theater Major Forum!

Without any doubt, we've had more parent and student CC members dedicated to Musical Theater than any other undergrad major. So, we've established a separate forum for Musical Theater Major discussion!

Now, you'll be able to start individual topics as needed, say, for summer programs, audition topics, etc.

Thanks for making College Confidential your musical theater major community!

Roger
Could you clue us in on how to just continue with Part 37, etc. if we want to keep going the way we have with mixed topics. Otherwise, please remind us how to begin a new topic here in our new home. Thanks for recognizing our energy and giving us a forum we can call our own.

see above, thanks

To start a new topic, just click the "New Topic" button while you are in the Musical Theater Major forum. Obviously, too, you can scan the existing topics to see if any are relevant to your question/comment and post in that topic.

While it may take a little getting used to, posting in separate topics will make things a lot easier to find, particularly for new people who arrive at the forum but even for veterans. It will also be less confusing than replying to a question two pages back in a long thread.

I just found this after being totally lost and unable to find our most precious thread. From the looks of it many others are lost too. I must be totally out of it because I can't even find the "new Topic" button.

I am trying to stay positive but I really liked the old way better. When I needed to reference something from an earlier post I just did a keyword search and always found what I was looking for. I really needed to find the thread for a student in class today and could not do it.

Maybe I am in the minority but if it looks like we are losing people with this new forum could we please go back to the way it was before? This thread is just too valuable for access to be complicated.

Now we are cooking with Gas!!

I just returned to the site and everything,(all related threads) are itemized under the MT heading. So much easier now to find and negotiate. THANK YOU!!!!

first of all, i, too, liked the old way. this is better if you're looking for a specific topic. but the other way was like a running conversation and more fun to read. but, to my question. i'm wondering about sam houston state university and how it ranks. they claim to rank themselves in the top 10 programs but, i'd like your responses. we're in the dallas area and thus just aren't interested in the northeastern, california and florida programs. i'm aware of ocu and we considering that. but, i wondered about any programs in texas, louisiana, missouri that are highly ranked. i have another question. i know many schools put on showcases or take kids to new york to audition. in schools where this isn't done, is there a good way for a student to get a job with a touring co., etc. for instance, are there open auditions somewhere for these touring shows or is there a general showcase somewhere. in other words, do you really need to attend school where you know they provide a good hiring opportunity? jamie

Please Note
Back in July, I created a post that stays at the top of the Musical Theater Forum which is titled: "For Those New to the Musical Theater Forum". It explains where to start and how to use this forum.

I am going to paste the content of that post here because some might come to THIS "welcome" thread first, and so I want to make sure everyone has read the post meant for those new to the forum. See below:

Suggestions For Those New To The Musical Theater Forum

Welcome to this forum if you are new to College Confidential and to the search and admissions process for musical theater college programs. A good place to start is to first click on the link at the top of this forum that will take you to the FAQ's, which was compiled by a wonderful musical theater student, Shauna. It covers many of the basics. Second, take a couple of hours and read back all the threads (or at least the topics that interest you) on this forum starting on the FIRST PAGE of threads as well as the ongoing general discussions entitled Colleges For Musical Theater Major (which is in PARTS and currently up to Part 40).

If you want to start a new thread, please first see if there is already a thread on that topic rather than start a second discussion on it. Just continue the thread already on that topic. That way all the information on a topic is together. General discussions tend to go in the threads "Colleges for Musical Theater Major Part X". The way you can find all 40 "PARTS" of the Colleges For Musical Theater Major threads is to go to the FAQ link and when you get there, look on the menu to the left of the page and pick the fourth link, titled "The Thread". There, Shauna has listed the links to all 40 parts of the ongoing discussion on musical theater colleges, as well as a link to all the current discussion which is now divided into topics.

For more information on how to search this forum and the topics go to the the FAQ link. Once there, click on the link on the left side of that page that says "Where Do I Start?" and it will explain other ways to find information on this forum as well as how to find information on the original (old) forum.

You might also find it useful to click on the third link on the left menu of the FAQ page that says "The Big List" because this is a list of musical theater programs which is a good resource to start when researching the BFA programs in this field.

You will find some very knowledgeable people on this forum including current theater college students, high school students involved in the college admissions process, parents of students who have already gone through the theater college admissions process and are in these programs currently, parents of students in the midst of the search/application/audition process, theater professionals, teachers, administrators and faculty from some college theater programs, and those well versed on the college admissions process. People help others and are very willing to share experiences.

Happy reading and hopefully posting....join us!

Your Moderator,
CollegeMom

I have moved many posts from this thread, some very recent, some going back to January, to the Colleges For Musical Theater, Part 40 thread because they are ongoing dicussion that best belongs in that thread, not this one. I allowed regular posters to respond to inquiries on this thread on various topics because I know their intentions were to try to make sure that the new posters asking questions here could find the responses to those questions. I want to make sure that anyone who is returning here to find those recent discussions or responses, please know that they were saved and moved to the Colleges For Musical Theater, Part 40 thread and look there. Please realize, however, that while the recent discussion posts from this thread will appear at the bottom of that thread, many other posts that came from this thread here are now inserted CHRONOLOGICALLY into that Part 40 thread and so may come across as OUT OF CONTEXT at times. That is the drawback to moving discussions from one thread to another as the posts get inserted chronologically. So, that is going to be the case there but the recent discussions are fairly intact.

From now on, if there is a question about being new to the forum or how to use it, come here. Otherwise, continue to post ongoing discussions in the Part 40 thread, or post on specific topic threads if one exists or create new topics as they arise.

Thank you!

to college mom:

Would it be possible to add NCSA to the sub heading of MT schools?

Thanks,
xxxx Mary Anna

And thanks for doing the sub headings. It's a great and helpful way to organize the board.

Mary Anna,

We have chosen to keep the list to MT schools or programs and not Acting ones. NCSA is an Acting program, not MT. If we were to add it, we'd have to add many other fine Acting BFA programs. We are going to keep this list for now to MT programs. We can't make it too long so the criteria was to stick with the MT programs. Feel free to add NCSA as a thread and bump it up as often as you like. Also, we have a Theater Schools thread under Arts Majors.

Thank you for your positive feedback.
CollegeMom

Got it. I understand.

Maybe some day the sub heading idea can be expanded. It's really gives great clarity to the board. I feel like I just cleaned out my closet!!!

thanks again,
xxx,Mary Anna

CollegeMom-
The new sub-headings are completely wonderful!!! [great analogy, Mary Anna!!!]

One question, wasn't this thread stickied to the top before? In the "move" did it become Un-stuck maybe?

Again, thank you so very much for going to bat for us MT people who thrive on organization and things like headings. Please pass along thanks to the techies who make this possible too.
:)

..........

I have questions regarding regarding my D applying to a MT university in the States We live in Vancouver B.C. Canada. Is this the forum for these questions?

Thanks

PP

What are your questions?

xxxx,Mary Anna

My D is in her final year of H.S. she has been involved in music and singing since she was about 6yrs old.Music lessons (Piano) for six years, singing with the Vancouver Children's Choir for eight years, leaving as the Senior Second Soprano after grade 10. During her first year of high school she was bitten by the MT bug, she auditioned for a senior HS production of Joseph and was given the role of the narrator. Since then she has gone on to audition for about six MT roles and landed leads in all, just finished playing Nancy in Oliver, and in the spring is the lead in Little House. She has had two amazing voice teachers both involved in MT / acting as part of her training. Also she has been very successful in community and competition MT events. All this and a 4.0 grade average. Hence, the name Proudpapa, I tell you this because like most MT parents with children that have come this far, we have all been told that our children are amazing and have a special gift. In Canada she has no place to continue her MT in a university program, but where in the states do we apply? Emerson, N.Y.U. Cal state @ Fullerton ?

I would appreciate any feedback from parents and/or students.

Thanks P.P.

Hi and thanks for giving the instructions for new moms using the site.
Is the FAQ's somewhere on the 'Musical Theatre discussion forum' page
or elsewhere, have not found it...sorry to be slow. Also, I'd like to access
the old continuous thread and find out basics, like when best to visit schools. Can you point me to these pages or include the links to each, if not too much trouble. I'm new and trying to find my way around. Thanks!

About three threads down from here you'll see IMPORTANT: FAQ's link. Click on that and you'll find a place to click to get to the FAQ's page. If you keep looking back to older pages of the main musical theatre page, you'll find the older discussion threads. Good luck and welcome!
