Does anyone know why Hartford’s retention rate is only 69%? My son likes the school and was recently accepted so the retention issue looms larger now than it did.

My son was also recently accepted, along with suprise merit money. I would like any info on what there is to do on campus, do most kids go home on weekends and info on the Barney School of Business.

S was accepted to Barney School of Business too and he is very likely to attend. Scheduled for an overnight soon. It is not a commuter school at all - approx 95% of freshman live on campus and I most stay on weekends. retention rate is actually around 75%. I also know that their financial aid is very decent.

My daughter was accepted last year and we spent quite a bit of time on campus as a result. I think that U of Hartford is a little unusual in that it probably has students with a wider range of abilities, compared to other similar-sized institutions. There are the well-respected Barney School of Business, Hartford Art School, Hartt School, and College of Engineering/Technology/Architecture. It is tougher to get into these programs, compared to the College of Arts & Sciences, and the College of Education/Nursing/Health. Then there is Hillyer College, an Associate Degree program that admits students who usually don’t meet admission standards for the rest of the University. I think that you will find the retention rate in the more selective colleges and schools to be significantly higher than the University-wide average rate. I suspect that the Hillyer retention rate is below the U-wide average, and may be in part responsible for dragging down the overall rate.

We were quite impressed with the campus as a whole, and as noted above, the financial aid package that was offered to our daughter was substantial. In the end, she decided to go in a very different direction (Hampshire College), but I remain convinced that University of Hartford is under-rated by too many folks and would be a fine place to study.

^^Are you saying that Hillyer students don’t complete their 2yrs at Hillyer? Or do you mean that once admitted to the 4yr UHart program of their choice, Hillyer students don’t graduate?

It is my understanding that the proportion of Hillyer students who do not attain an Associates degree is larger than the proportion of U Hartford students who do not attain a Bachelors degree. This should not be surprising, as entry into Hillyer is essentially open, i.e. anyone can get in. I believe that Hillyer students who attain Associates degrees and then transfer into other U Hartford programs are quite successful. This too should be no surprise, as those students have already demonstrated that they are successful at completing college-level coursework.

^^ No surprise at all - - I just wanted to make sure I understood what your were saying.

Thanks.

(Interesting; my D also looked at Hampshire, but I don’t think it will make the final cut.)

My daughter is waiting to hear from Hartford and the Hartt School. Does anyone have any idea when the acceptance letters will be going out this year? She really likes the music school but has also been accepted to Ithaca and is anxious to make a choice.

Please note that we are still processing decisions and all letters will be mailed from the University of Hartford’s Office of Admission. The last batch will be mailed no later than tomorrow (Friday, April 2). Good Luck!

Please remind me - does a student have to be accepted into Hartt first and then to the University? If a student’s file is under academic review, does it mean they were accepted into Hartt and now needs academic approval from Admissions?

hey im a high school student interested in U of Hartford, i just have a few questions about the school and the campus …
Why do you like the school/campus?
I want to go in architecture so is there a good program/classes for that for a freshmen?
What is there to do on campus?
What attracted you to U of Hartford?

Thanks!

I attended uha my freshman year in the fall of 2006 and it was the absolute worst decision of my life. From the mindless, spoiled, unambitious students to the boredom of being trapped on a small campus in the middle of nowhere- Hartford is a far cry from what college should be. 14 out of 20 girls who lived on my floor freshman year transferred…Can’t say I blame them!!
