Well, I've given it my all...

I mailed my RD application for admission to the class of 2012 to Middlebury in December, and just had an interview this past weekend. Now I must wait until March 28th! Chance me?

Caucasian male
AZ
ACT: 28
GPA: about 3.4
Do not need fin aid
Intended major should I be accepted: International Relations with a focus on East Asian studies.

Taken only 2 APs, though school only offers 7. AP Spanish and AP English Literature my senior year. I've excelled in english, spanish, history, and art. I've struggled in math and science. My school doesn't really have honors courses, but its curriculum is considered to be quite rigorous.

I am taking Japanese language classes at my community college.

Am also involved in a rigorous masterwork program at my school in which seniors may create a project that takes the entire year to make. The project must be a combination of academic and extracurricular passion. Previous masterwork projects have been diverse, with some students writing symphonies and others conducting various biochemical experiments. I will create a graphic novel.

ECs:
Heavily involved in visual arts, and have taken art classes in and out of school for the past 5 years. Have helped set up the school art show every year and have participated in regional shows. Have done summer art programs and have organized and participated in various visual art events in my HS community and in my region.

Studied Japanese independently for a year and studied abroad there over the summer. Am now taking classes at a CC. Got an A average for my first semester JPN 101 class.

Became National Art Honor Society member in sophomore year. Am vice president in senior year

Have been in Student Recruitment Committee for 3 years of high school. (I'm essentially a tour guide for prospective students to my school.)

And various class officer positions. President in 9th, VP in 10th, secretary in 12th.

My essays were excellent. I wrote about an experience in Japan. I also sent another essay about my fascinations with tea.

My essentially "Why Midd" essay was good, referencing Middlebury's diverse and multicultural student body and how I want to learn in an environment such as that one. I may not be an international applicant, but I've lived all over the world in 4 different countries (U.S., U.K., Mexico, Switzerland) and 4 different states.

Most importantly, I've shown a tremendous amount of interest in the school over the past few years. I've attended every college visit that Middlebury has made to my school since sophomore year and visited Middlebury in the spring of my junior year. I wrote a thank you letter to the admissions office for my excellent tour and info session. I've recently contacted the Japanese professor at Middlebury (and have been replied to!). I was also fervent in scheduling an alumni interview with the school as I had marked the box on my app asking for one, but was not contacted (some address mess up or something.) However, I was determined and managed to get one! As I ended my conversation with my interviewer, she said "I hope you get in, you're the kind of person that needs to be at Middlebury."

I have basically been all over this school for the past two years and it is my true top choice. However, my academics and test scores are not very competitive for Midd. Not only that, but a friend of mine who is much more qualified than I am has applied to Midd as well.

I am hoping my essays, ECs, geographical location, and geographically diverse life will aid me in admissions.

What do you all think? Do I even stand a shot? Middlebury is just so competitive...Fortunately, I got in to Lewis and Clark College in Portland, OR under an EA plan! Still...I would LOVE to go to Middlebury.

I wish you luck! Just until then, relax! You seem like a very impressive applicant otherwise!

hey...
u have a gr8 chance. Ur essays, recos and highly demonstrated interest weigh heavily in your favor...and add that to the comment by ur interviewer u should be in...gud luck mate

I don't want to be a negative nancy but I was an eagle scout, 3.7 GPA, top 10% of my class, 7 AP classes taken total (5 of them this year), 33 on my ACT, and the only applicant from my region of the state. I applied EDII and still got rejected. So I would say that Middlebury is a reach for you, but you never know, with a great essay and recs you could get in.

rjwh08, I'm fully aware Middlebury receives many fine and highly qualified candidates. I find it appalling that you weren't accepted; I've no idea what could have caused it.

But, as many say, college admissions is a crapshoot. There is not set formula for admission. I'm just a hopeful who has decided to "shoot for the stars," so to speak, and whether I find myself on that star next year or not, it's no big deal for me. I'm just excited to move on to a new phase in my life. Of course, doing it at Middlebury would be great, but there are plenty of other excellent places.

Other thoughts?

I hope you get in, because you sound like someone I'd want to get to know! I actually think you have a really solid shot. I got in with a 3.8 UW GPA, 2180 SAT, which are pretty standard for Midd applicants I think; I am also 1/2 a URM; I think really it was my extracurriculars and my essay that tipped the scales for me, I'm an artist... painting, writing, theater direction/tech/art design, and cooking are my fortes. I even had an anti-hook, a suspension in 9th grade that was pretty ridiculous for me to have been slapped with, but by the time I could check the admissions office's decision I had TOTALLY convinced myself that either that suspension, or the fact that I hadn't taken honors math, or the sprinkling of Bs over the years, would keep me out.

Basically, it's impossible to say from here, but if you get in, you'll have deserved it; if you don't, whatever, it's so random, and you'll end up at some other great college. The interest you've shown can only help you.

Best of luck!!

Haha, thanks russiasaurus. What kind of visual art have you done? Do you have a Deviant art page by any chance?

Further thoughts?

Who did you talk to, Snyder sensei or Ogawa sensei? I am currently taking Japanese at Midd, though the work is tough, the teachers will make sure you get an awesome experience! I would love to meet you man, best of luck :D

locofoblo, for how many years have you been studying japanese at midd?

i spoke with professor snyder. he seemed like a really nice guy and was able to answer all of my questions about the japanese program at middlebury. i havent spoken with professor ogawa though.

私は一年生だよ、Snyder 先生もとてもやさしと思う :D
