Well-known monologues?

Hello,

I am auditioning for a few school next weekend, and I have my monologues mostly prepared. What I'm wondering is how famous colleges like the monologues to be, if at all. I have a really, really funny monologue from Talk Radio, but the character's only appearance is when she says the monologue. Is this too unknown? I just don't want to do a Durang or Simon monologue or something from like whysanity.com and things like that. Thanks!

If you kill that particular monologue - go for it!! As long as it fits the requirements for the school you are auditioning for (length, age-appropriate, contrasting, etc.), it will be fine.

Best wishes!

Well, colleges see like 5 jillion monologues every year. So, most prefer if you don’t do monologues from very popular shows or writers (ex: Labute, Simon, Miller, Romeo & Juliet, For Colored Girls…, etc.) because chances are they have seen every speech in the show so much they want to puke at the first word. However, like the previous poster said, if you’re reeaaallllyy good at a famous monologue, you can get away with it.

Another perk to obscure monologues is if you mess up, chances are smaller the adjudicators will notice as opposed to messing up something from Tennessee Williams.

But if you do a really obscure one, be extra sure to do your homework in case they ask you about the play.

It’s almost always better to use a lesser-known monologue than a really famous monologue. There are a LOT of reasons for this, some of which others have said. Nobody has ever lost points for having too obscure a monologue, that’s not what they are evaluating you on.

has a good list of overdone women’s monologue. I certainly have heard of Bogosian’s “Talk Radio”, but have never read or seen it. But on the list on that page are TWO women’s monologues from Talk Radio. If you are talking about one of those, you probably should keep looking for a better monologue. Really, if your monologue is on that list, you might as well be doing Durang, Simon, etc.
