Well-Rounded vs Lopsided with a Passion

I know that most people say that the top colleges (HYP etc) like applicants who are well-rounded, as in get good grades and do a variety of things well. However, I keep hearing other people say to keep your ECs focused on fewer activities in what you love to do and devote your time to bettering your "passion" that you should emphasize in applications. So my question is: Is it better to be well-rounded and be involved in a multitude of things or be focused on one or two things?

It’s better to be all rounded AND also have a passion for something.

^ Thanks, Elvito, but that’s what I was wondering about.

If you want to be well-rounded and do a variety of things, doesn’t that detract from your focus/passion? I mean, I guess you could be involved in many activities but that doesn’t make an as convincing theme, does it not?

My passions definitely lie within the arts (visual, theatrical, musical) and I was heavily involved with them: summer activities, school ensembles, school productions, classes, etc. However, I was also involved in student government, fbla, politics, volunteering, and all that jazz.

Basically, yes, doing other things does detract in some ways, but really they want people who display curiosity in a breadth of things who also have the ability to work towards acquiring a profound understanding of a few things that interest them.
