Wes vs. Bowdoin

Perilous, you’ve certainly opened my eyes to a weakness in Wesleyan’s otherwise strong music program. If it is something as simple as changing the carpets, I will certainly make my views known the next time I see President Roth. I can’t promise that a new building will be erected in the next four years. But, your and Mythmom’s criticisms have given me food for thought.

Congratulations to you both. I am truly humbled by this whole process and how it seems to always work out for the best. :)

johnwesley: That would be so awesome because Wes is such a great school. A friend of mine has a son studying classical piano at Wes and having a wonderful time.

DS probably would have chosen Williams anyway because like perilous’ son, he wanted a change. He is used to suburban/urban and wanted the rural serenity of the mountains.

However, I think the student body at Wes sure was hard to turn down.

perilous: I want to add my congratulations to jw. Your son made a great choice.

I know the decision has been made but I wanted to add that since music pervades the campus, the student will have the opportunity to play their instrument in a variety of venues. My kid plays a string instrument and from the semester she arrived at Was has performed in plays and for film soundtracks.

Thanks again to all…I am really happy with his Wes choice as I think it is “right” for him…WOW, would love to see the music facilities improved (check out Bowdoin and even the Lawrenceville School (in NJ) for examples of how nice they could/should be!!!)

Agree with all of the music opportunities on campus, plus theater and film – he’s going to love it!!! And as a “hockey dad”, I hope he gets the hockey bug back too!!! He broke his ankle last fall playing hockey (surgery, plate, 5 screws) which just devastated his senior prep school season – he is so discouraged, he wants to “take a year off” from hockey. I am hoping that once he attends a Wes hockey game (BTW, fantastic athletic facilities at Wes), he’ll get the itch to play again. One of his prep school teammates is attending Wes also and I hope will drag him in too!!

Go Cardinals!!!

Welcome to Wesleyan. My son, who will be a Wes senior next year, had the same final choice between Wesleyan and Bowdoin. He chose Wesleyan and has loved it. Although not a music major, he played frosh year in several school run ensembles. He has given that up to play in several student organized bands. He has played with these groups all over New England, including the Blue Note in NYC last weekend.
