Wesleyan University vs UNC Chapel Hill (Direct CS at Chapel Hill)

Hello,

I am currently facing a big dilemma which is deciding between Wesleyan University and UNC-Chapel Hill. For UNC-Chapel Hill, I have gotten in direct for CS. For Wesleyan, we have to declare our major farther out. I am transferring in as a sophomore.

Since my career dream is to do Computer Science where would I be better off at? I’ve seen that Wesleyan offers a 3/2 Masters program which you apply for through your junior year.

Thank you

I think you may be confusing the Wesleyan BA/MA program with its 3/2 engineering partnership with Columbia and Dartmouth. I don’t think you want the engineering program; you would have to cram too much into your sophmore and junior years and effectively only be at Wesleyan for two years before transferring again.

What Wesleyan does have that would be of interest to you would be an opportunity to do a deep-dive into theoretical computer science over the next three years with the option of completing a Masters thesis in two semesters. What’s mad crazy about the Wesleyan program is that the two semesters leading up to your Masters degree would be free; you even get a stipend for meals!

If the costs are similar, I’d pick UNC since you’re already in the CS program and and UNC having a better reputation in CS. good luck!
