Wesleyan vs USC Marshall

I'm interested in business/economics, computer science, and international relations and I'm debating between these two schools.

Pros of USC: city environment, excellent weather, Trojan family, opportunity to double major/minor with ease, strong mix of academic and social spheres.

Pros of Wesleyan: strong liberal arts education, opportunity to switch majors later on down the road (might have to stick with business at USC), open curriculum.

Cost is more or less the same at both schools and isn't an issue. The only thing that worries me about USC is that I'm not entirely sure that I want to pursue business and it seems like I'd be limiting myself to one career path if I went there. Which school would be better for my specific interests?

Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated.

While Wesleyan doesn’t have anything resembling southern CA weather, it has many of the academic interests you hold - economics is one of Wesleyan’s strongest departments, as is the government major (which has an international politics concentration if you so desire). Wes also has a small but spirited comp sci department. As you said, there is a lot of flexibility to be had with the open curriculum.

You have to decide if the broad academic opportunities of Wesleyan are more important than the business major, warm weather, and Division 1 sports social atmosphere of USC. Wesleyan knows how to party, too (lot’s of parties and events on campus) it’s just different from what a larger school would have.

Traditional small New England liberal arts college vs. large Southwest Division 1 sports university business school. Which sounds more appealing?

It’s pretty easy to double major here at Wes, too. About 40% of students (including myself) do, usually in quite diverse fields. While there’s maybe not the same DI spirit at Wes as USC, there’s certainly a strong sense of pride in the community here, largely born out of the exciting things everyone tends to be pursuing at any given time. To echo smartalic, I think the main differences are DI vs. DIII, the cultural difference that follows from that, the weather, and the size.

There is a huge cultural difference between USC and Wes. I see them as so different, it is difficult to imagine the same kid as equally happy at both.

USC = big frat scene, big sports scene, larger classes, a much larger preprofessional environment than a purely intellectual environment and historically somewhat socially conservative. USC is in LA, but it is in the grittiest, worst part of LA and you can’t safely walk outside the designated radius. The dozens of kids I know who go (or went) there often spend weekends at sports events or frat parties and are very rah rah USC. Everyone I know who goes to USC loves it.

Wes= no real frat scene, no big sports, a very energized and very intellectual student body where students are very interested and welcoming of differences. Very liberal atmosphere. Weekends are often at student events such a plays, poetry slams, speaker events, but partying is also going on every weekend. Everyone I know who goes to Wes loves it.

Where do you best fit?
