West coast male applying to Peabody?

I am a junior with a strong passion for global health specifically relating to children. Vanderbilt came up in the college conversation after finding out they are one of the only schools in the country whose financial aid package would reflect my family’s unique situation. Unfortunately, southern schools (for the absolutely dumbest reasons) have not the most positive reputation you could say. But after looking into Vandy further and seeing the child development and other unique programs and opportunities at Peabody, I fell in love. I plan on applying ED, but I was wondering if being a male and from Oregon will give any bump to my application? Thank you ALL!

@2023doctor I would have to think your Oregon residency would help you. Of course with out top scores and grades with where you come from won’t matter. As you probably know Vanderbilt is incredibly competitive as the middle 50% of the ACT is 33-35.

I wouldn’t really call it a “southern” school. Although the most students that go here come from TN (about 14-15%) Vandy is a national university with students from just about all the states. Also Nashville is a very cool city with lots of great restaurants, pro football and hockey and of course music.

One other thing to note is that Peabody has about a 20% admission rate as opposed to Engineering and A&S. with admit rates of about 11% If possible you should make a trip this summer to see how you feel about the campus and city. If you like it ED is the way to go as they fill a lot of the class via ED.

Good luck to you on this exciting time in your life.

@burghdad thank you very much for the help – really appreciate it. I’m actually visiting in about 6 weeks so I’m greatly looking forward to that! The strong point of my app is my big spike in global health and children’s rights (I run a pretty large international nonprofit as well as other pretty big ecs in those areas) which I’m hoping will also give a boost to my app. Gotta get that ACT score a few points though! Do you know if being male in Peabody will make any difference? All other replies are welcome

Definitely apply! Vandy is very diverse (intentionally so), and students come here from all regions. It may sound and look preppy from the outside, but I assure you it’s not. Peabody is very highly ranked for its programs, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. Coupled with the Vandy med center and the many research opportunities it offers, there is so much you can do to study global health for children. I would also suggest exploring the Medicine, Health, and Society major: you can double major/minor across all undergraduate schools.

@Sophie1295 That’s so great to hear (and something that’s really unique to vandy)! Someone once told me that Peabody is the #1 child development program in the US, is that true??

Not sure about undergrad, but here are the rankings for its grad school programs.

We are from Northern CA and my S doesn’t feel the southern vibe
