Western Schools?

Does anyone know of any schools, public and private, in the west (from CA to IL, etc.) that look for students from the east coast?

I've heard that schools like Indiana and Iowa do. I'm from NJ and I know that there are certain schools us Jersey kids constantly apply to (UMD, Penn State, USC). I'm looking for schools that aren't usually pursued by east coast students.

Thank you.

Indiana has more easterners than it wants at this point.

The midwestern LACs tend to be about 50% kids from the midwest, and 40% or so from the east and west. (The rest are from the south or int’l)

So, if you are not from the midwest, you have a slight advantage at places like Grinnell, Carleton, Kenyon, Oberlin, and Macalester. And you will not be competing against a dozen of your class-mates for admission either-most of them will have not heard of these places. If you can deal with that, then you can get a great education at a lower cost than that provided by LACs in the NE.

Other good schools to add to M’s Mom’s list include Lawrence University, Kalamazoo, Earlham, Beloit, Centre College, St. Olaf, and the College of Wooster. An easterner who is not quite a shoe-in for Carleton etc. might have a shot at merit aid from these schools.

I’d probably add Rice to that list since 50% of their students are from Texas.

The UC system is anxious for more OOS students, particularly the non Berkeley and UCLA schools.
