What a cmu students think of CMU

THIS IS VERY LONG, i know. These are all of my best posts. it has information on almost anything you might want to know about CMU student life. If you are considering CMU i suggest you read this, but realize this is just my opinion.

They are dorms what can one say. They arent bad. I like them all. I advise morewood E tower. its all freshman so its very sociable and its has its own restaurant. which is great on the cold days.

we have a new dorm...new house it is called. not bad i must say. the reason i chose E tower over new house is b/c the rooms are like tiny boxes. but those tiny boxes have a/c. i dont think that should be a deciding factor but that is just me.

other freshman housing is scattered all around campus. they arent that bad at all. I visited rutgers and well lets say CMU dorms are the ritz compared to those...

overall housing is good. one piece of advice tho... GET YOUR DEPOSIT IN EARLY!!!! housing is decided based on the day they receive your deposit. if you want to live in a dorm you will have to get the deposit in early. otherwise you will get stuck in off campus appts. that sucks b/c your first year you MUST live on campus.

should i elaborate...if so on what

I was a mechE. it's ok. the work load as strange as it sounds is not that bad. Which is contrary to myth. as long as you plan out your time, you will do fine. I made the HUGE mistake of not doing that the first semester...lets just say my hair started to fall out b/c of all the stress. now its much better b/c i plan out my time. the double you are looking for is also a great combo b/c that can be done in exactly 4 years with no overloading(going over the recommended credits).

the people over here are awesome. It has a great blend of Tech, super nerds, party ppl and everything in between. there are lots of clubs you can join as well. Whatever you like its here. and if its not just get 5 ppl to jion an you have a club

housing isnt bad...its kinda expensive tho. lots of my friends want to go off campus. I dont mind tho.

JOB OPP...THEY ROCK!!! everyone who is anyone comes to hire here. the biggest corp all come and small ones too. I think we were ranked best college for employment. which doesnt suprise me. basically you come here and you are gonna get a job. of course there are the exceptions(ppl with really low gpa's and that did nothing all 4 years), but most everyone gets jobs. The career center works hard to help you get internships as well. but most internships are from networking
exception to what i just said
I am a material science major...we are a very small dept. so not many employers come here...we have to go to them. but the name CMU carries you a long way. every mat sci major last semester either went to grad school or got hired.

do i love it here? HECK YEAH!!!!! I love CMU so much. i know many ppl who say that. cmu rocks there is no doubt about it. pittsburgh has some stuff to do but it is no NYC. the prof are all really nice, they love to talk to you. so much opps are here its amazing. I am so happy i chose cmu

Thanks so much for all of your comments! You answered many of my questions about CMU.

Excellent post, sir!

I will most definately be coming here if I get a half-decent financial package from CMU over my state school, which is basically free.

p.s. where exactly do you find that CMU is the #1 school for employment?

I believe Newsweek said it. I remember seeing that ranked as well.

How is morewood E? How are the dorms in comparison to New House? New House had nice bathrooms and everything was new, what about morewood e?

from students. BUT i went to career services and i asked them about it as well and they were mostly in line with it. They told me that as long as you dont slack off and do nothing. Chances are you will get a job. I know that for my department(Materials Science and Engineering). Every person that graduated last year went to either elite grad schools or got jobs. (source proffessor Barmak & career services).

E tower is great i love it. The rooms are big compared to most on campus. the showers are stalls(which is great b/c in Donner you just have curtains). the ppl here are really nice esp in the beginning of the year. just walk around and virtually every door is wide open and ppl love to talk. Its super social as well b/c every floor has its own lounge(same as in New house). they are pretty much the centers of activity. its also connected to the underground like i mentioned above

typist will you be comin to CMU?

Good thread. Should be revived.

Bump

CMU is hard.

I miss high school.

Bump...for all those ppl who didnt see

augi7--how did you not plan out your time? how did you resolve it?

seems like a silly question, but I have a larger-than-life procrastination problem and was hoping you could shed some light :)

For people thinking about Freshman housing, there are two places I would recommend, Morewood E and New House. New House because you will develop unbelievable relationships with the people throughout the building, and you can network with so many different majors. (This is important, because CMU is very inclusive by Major/College, by this I mean--well, you will rarely find an HSS student hanging out with CS students, its kinda funny the college rivalry there, but you want to mingle with all kinds of people!) The downside of New House is that the dorms are soooo tiny, and the bathrooms are not private, but the social atmosphere is definately worth it. Morewood E has bigger rooms and private bathrooms, but not the same social atmosphere.

If I could go back and do it again, I would do New House, because I've found so many great people from there.

A current CMU student recomended Mudge as the best dorm... is this true?

I live in E tower...Ummmm I have a kick ass social life. party every second i have the time to. 4th floor is awesome with the parties. I met 2 of the best friends here in E tower(one is in HSS and the other is in CFA...I am in CIT). If you want a good place i suggest go by the actual dorm itself NOT the ppl in it b/c you will (if you put yourself out there) makes tons of friends. and one important correction E tower does NOT have private bathrooms.

well to helloworld... kinda late i know. but LIVE by your assignment pad. keep to it like crazy. I personally found the dorm very distracting ppl always comin in and out of my room. runnin around. to get over it is just pure will power. I realize how much is on the line and i dont want to fall behind. dont get me wrong I do still fall behind. but no where near as much as b4. basically find a place where you can work and wont be distracted. that is all I can tell you. b/c it late and i want to go to bed

I thought CMU is a type of school where nobody talks each other!! I'm so glad I found this thread!! I think I'm applying to CMU next year!!

I asked this question in some other thread too, but I didn't get an answer yet.

Can someone talk about New House and Morewood E Tower and bathroom privacy? (curtains? stalls?nothing?)

Take it from me-

Mudge is the way to go- I lived there this year, and I'm living one floor above where I was last year. You get a private bathroom w/ shower and sink shared among the 4 of you in the suite, you get some of the biggest rooms on campus (bigger than Morewood E by far), and the dorm life is great- it's quieter than most places, but there are still times where you'll have parties, random people in the hall playing football, etc.

It's one of the closer knit communities- our hall went out together all the time, but we still got out with people from all over campus and had a good time- sure it's a little more of a walk into campus, but it's nothing serious.

As far as the AC goes... you'll probably use it for the first month that you're at CMU- that's really the only time that we wished we had it in Mudge- we just compensated by opening the windows and putting a few fans up around the room, and everything was fine. All the other times, you'll have a heater on, or you'll just be at the right temperature anyway.

That and you get Kirk if you're in B-Tower- the world's coolest janitor in town.

That said- live in Mudge.

Mudge Love!

PS The bathroom has a heater too- no worries about being cold.

No one cares.
We basically come in two flavors, with subtle overtones. Where ever you go to school, there will be dorms with communals, shared, or private situations. The more private-the more expense.

If there is some personal equipment problems that need to be specialized, I suggest you talk to the housing department, soon.

As a freshman, I was reluctant to live in the dormitories on campus. However, my experience in the 1st year dorm made everyday living at CMU a great deal easier. A very short walk to the academic buildings, New House lounges and study areas are organized in a way to promote socializing and studying between residents. Although the rooms are not very big, this also encourages students to hang out with friends outside of their dorm rooms. The amenities in the dorm are also incrediby nice. This includes several large TV and study areas, pool tables, free laundry service, workout room, large kitchen.

Dont be misled by the workload. Freshmen work load isn't too bad. They start hitting you during Sophomore year. Junior year is unbelievable. Each prof approaches his class as if its the only one that you have on your schedule. Senior year ..Ist semester is hard, but the final semester has a little breather, because most of the core classes are out of the way. Chem E major...frshman year starts out with 250 or so people, and they have to cut that to about 70 people by Junior year. Avoid Prof larry Biegler...can't read his writing, and he's disorganized. :)
