What about these schools for film (possibly directing)?

My son is going into his Junior year of high school. He wants to go to college for film - most interested in directing. He is extremely bright and currently has over a 100 average. He took the PSAT as a sophomore and his guidance counselor thinks he may end up with National Merit Scholarship Finalist status when he takes it this year as a Junior. He will also have many AP and Community College credits, if the school accepts them.
He wants a school where he will get lots of hands on experience and get to take film classes from the beginning. He wants to be far from home (Western NY State). Those are his only "requirements". As we want to start visiting these places, we have come up with this list:
Central Florida University
UNC Wilmington
American University - Washington, DC
Boston University
Ohio (the one with the Honors Film Program)

Any thoughts on these schools for film, and any personal experiences with them?
Also, any thoughts about an OOS student and financial aid? Our EFC at that time will probably be around $5K. So we would need a lot of grants/scholarships to keep the loans down.
Thanks everyone!

My son just graduated from Ohio University’s Honors Tutorial College in Video Production. For him, it was the perfect place to go, because you are making films from the very beginning. I will PM you his web page and his filmography - over 50 films in college. The first film he worked on after college (that he did all of the visual effects for) went on to win an award at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. The HTC is an incredible journey. The friends he made are now mostly employed in the film industry (right out of college) and are enjoying life. I recommend the Scripps School of Communcations Media Arts program over the Film School.

PS: If you qualify for HTC, there is guaranteed merit money to bring your tuition down to almost nothing.

Anyway, rather than go on about it, you can check some of my old posts under the Ohio University forum under specific colleges.

If you want more info, PM me. I can point you to some films that they made, including one BTS (“behind the scenes”) of their first freshman film competition. Fun stuff.

We are in a similar situation-son starting junior year, Straight A’s so far, good PSAT’s (soph year)- he is interested in film production. He also wants a place where he can be making films right from the beginning.

I have a couple of questions:

1) Given the small number of film school applicants who actually get accepted to these programs, how many applications do you suggest they submit?
2) Here is our list so far, we’d love comments/suggestions/additions:

University of Southern California
NYU- Tisch
Ohio Honors Tutorial College
UT-Austin
University of Central Florida
Chapman
Hampshire
Emerson
University of North Carolina School of the Arts

Considering: San Diego State, California State, Northridge,
