What ACT is "good enough" for these schools?

Depending on the school he might actually prefer an Arts&Sciences curriculum as an Econ major. But at a place like IU definitely go for Kelley. Not really worth it otherwise. GT I think he’s looking at the Liberal Arts School. Currently his #1 choice and we are visiting next month, along with UGA.

My kids are dead set against UCs/CA schools and I am too, with some exceptions. The impacted majors, inability to double major in many cases, and the horrible housing issues— just not appealing. I do like UC Davis and S may check it out after I nag him some more. Fortunately cost is not a huge concern for us, though value always is!

D has looked at NYU extensively. Just seems so hard to double major across schools. She’s not sure if the non-campus setting is to her liking either.

Yeah 34 is the target. Maybe not for the first try but eventually.

In that case, has she looked at the two colleges at the other selective University in NYC? Columbia Univ’s undergraduate colleges address some of her concerns: There is a real campus, with a definite campus feel, double-majors are not at all uncommon, and at their Barnard College they look beyond numeric scores to identify young women with great potential.

There are TV/Radio productions happening constantly in the city, where one could apply for internships, and course catalogues and facilities (such as gyms, dining halls, libraries) are shared between the two colleges, as are Ivy League sports teams.

Even though my daughter studies at Barnard, she landed a full-year internship at NYU - so there are many opportunities in the city and the subway/transit will get you where you need to be.

Northwestern University middle 50% ACT range = 33-35.

50% of last class was admitted in the ED round.

If Northwestern’s 25th% ACT is a 33, then your daughter should aim higher obviously.

If not applying ED to Northwestern, then admission rate is substantially below the 9% overall admit rate.

I short, need an ACT of 34 or higher to be competitive for admission to Northwestern University.

As you go forward with your son, IU Kelley is good to consider for rolling admissions. It is always nice to have an acceptance in hand as you wait for other decisions to come in. For this year you need a 30 ACT score to be a direct admit.

Also as a suggestion for your daughter, Syracuse Newhouse School of Communications is highly regarded and a school to possibly research. Good luck.

Biggest factor at UGA is the UGA GPA. Calculate that. There are instructions on the UGA Admissions Blog. Read that and the comments/answers afterwards. UGA is super transparent about the makeup of their class. The last blog post discusses exactly how they group applicants during the review process. Then look at the blog posts for the class stats for the last year or two. That will give you a good idea.

Also as far as ACT goes for UGA, they only look at math and English. Both of these sections are the easiest to prep for and easiest to improve. Science is not science on the ACT. It really is a version of the reading test and scores should be similar. All the answers are on the page. You don’t have to know the topic to get a 36. Best way to prep for those is do practice tests and understand what you did wrong.
