Sorry I am from another country, so could you simply explain to me what are frats? Thanks

the easiest way to explain it to you? go watch legally blonde.

LOL ouch (10)

Watch Animal House. Typically, they are houses in which you live with a group of your friends and are known for throwing big parties on college campuses. There are other fraternities that more-closely resemble clubs and focus on community service or a specified interest -- "business fraternity", "prelaw fraternity". Generally, they are good ways to make friends and build connections.

Legally blonde? As in her sorority? And Animal House?

Talk about horrible advice . . .

Frats are different depending on where you are in the country, what school you're at. In some places they are the crazy party places that are almost Animal House, in others they're nothing like them.

The most simple explanation is that they are secret brotherhoods (as in they have lots of secrets, not that no one knows who is in them) that own a house where some brothers live and sponsor events - social, community service, etc

dima, what fantastic advice.

I'm sorry, but you can't always believe what you see in the movies ;)

I know I don't explain much but really that's because it's so hard to generalize a system that is different at small schools from large schools, different in different parts of the country, and even differ house from house on the same campus. The best advice is to learn about them from people in the schools you are interested in, as they know the specific situation on that campus.
