Cello/Orchestra - Been a consistent member of my community orchestra since I was in the 4th grade which has been the same amount of time I have been taking private lessons. Was named principal cellist for senior year. I also was selected as one of the few members of my orchestra to join chamber orchestra through an audition process. This is a self run orchestra that met three times a week. I am also a mentor for a national program run at my school called United Sound, where we teach disabled students how to play instruments of their choice.l, in hopes that one day they will be able to be members of our school’s orchestra. It was newly introduced my junior year and I quickly hopped on the opportunity to join.

Vocal Performance/Musicals - I started to train with my school’s choral director sophomore year, and auditioned for my first musical in the Spring of 2017. I was named to be one of the main supporting characters in the show. I will also be taking part in both the fall and spring musicals of my senior year.

Kung Fu - Have been taking classes at my Kung Fu academy since I was 6, and am currently a third degree black belt. I now teach other students for roughly 10 hours per week at my academy. I also was chosen to be one of 12 students (or if the 150 attending my academy) to be invited to partake in the Academy Leadership Team, where we are required to take an extra class per month where we receive one on one training in order to improve our performance. I have competed in past years in New England Regional Tournaments and have consistently done well.

Soccer - Was captain of the JV soccer team my freshman year, and became a varsity player my sophomore year, which corniness through junior year as well.

Destination Imagination - A program where students do a year long project in a particular discipline and then compete in a competition during March, where they have to our on an 8 minute performance displaying their project. I was in a team my Freshman Year and we placed first at our regional competition and 3rd at our Massachusetts state competition. However program lost its funding from the school system my sophomore year, so I could no longer compete, however I began training instead to become an appraiser at respective competitions. I was a judge at one Regional tournament my sophomore year and one my junior year. I also began managing an elementary level team in the program without funding (used fundraisers to gain money for materials) alongside an adult supervisor, and continued this in my junior year as well.

French - I am the President of my schools chapter of la Société Honoraire de Français (French National Honors Society), where we have scheduled times to meet at the public library to teach young students French language and culture to peak their interest in the disclipine as they approach high school. I am also the Vice President of our school’s respective French Club.

I am also a member of my school’s Writing Center, which is a group of writing tutors who help underclassmen with writing assignments, a prominent member of my school’s GSA, a member of NHS, and a member of Poetry Club.

Is there anything that sticks out in my application negatively? Please let me know!

Boost your SAT score up another 30-50 points and I’d say you’ve got a really good shot! Best of luck!

I say it’s a Low Reach.

I agree with kalechip21: if you can get your SAT to above a 1500, you’ve got a really good shot. I don’t know if you need to retake those two subject tests, particularly the Math II. Going from a 780 to a 790 or 800 is unlikely to help much, and probably will just be unnecessary stress during an already stressful time. I think highlighting your interest in music, especially your chamber orchestra and the United Sound program, would look really good on your app, especially considering you’re applying as a music major! It seems very cool and unique!

I’m applying to Brown this year as well, as a theater major. Best of luck to us both

Quick glance (and with the caveat that your essays will be extremely important), it’s a competitive app by and large. As said previously, if your SAT score was your one shot at it, I’d take another and see if you can boost the score, Given your concentration interest, any improvement to your Chem subject test would be beneficial. I’d say you should be happy with your math II, but if you want to try again, It can’t hurt. Keep in mind Brown curates a class, so who you are and how well you communicate that in your essays should also be a focus. There’s a certain common thread that contrasts with the tangible diversity of the Brown student body, namely their passion…especially for learning. Couple that with the near universal sense of intellectual curiosity that’s so infectious even to visitors, and you can get a sense of what kind of person succeeds at Brown.
