What are my chances at transfering

I'm a Canadian student who always had a dream of attending an IVY league college however due to my low I mean low G.P.A 2.75 (first three years) I gave that up.
which I brought to a 3.8 in my last year which got me into a great University since grade 12 marks are all that matter in Ontario. I also have two AP exams which I recieved 4 on both.

Now after my first year universiy I'm think I would like to transfer

SATs: Did not take
College GPA: 3.9
Transferring out of: Toronto University
Major: Biochemistry
ECs: Member of student counsel :First year Rep; Volunteer as a notetaker, at the local hospital and tutor for highschool students.
Ethnicity: Black; West Idian does it matter because I was born in Canada

What are my chances please be completely honest as I don't want to waste my money or time.

well your gpa is high and you attended a good school. It also helps considerably that you are an under-represented minority. I think if you take the SAT and get 1400+, ull be in good shape EVERYWHERE. What courses did u take? Thats going to be real important because as opposed to canadian schools, american colleges have core curriculums.

I took
General Chemistry
General Biology
Physics the one equal to highschool
Calculs full year
French as a first language

How much will my highschool marks hurt me?

Definitely put you are black on your application. Your chances of admittance will be higher. I know this may sound sad, but affirmative action makes it such. Good luck. If you can take the SATs and keep your GPA up and write a solid essay, you'll get in to at least Brown or Cornell.

yeah i suggest taking an english. Whats your overall HS gpa?

hey, i think your GPA will get you in and your ethinicity will definitely help.
just out of curiousity.
could you please list your course code?
if i understand correctly, you only finished 1st year at u of t?

also, i don't mean to contradict aca0260, but i was under the impression SATs are useless in transfer admission.
but either way... i would say schools will overlook your high school stats since you proved they didn't affect your College GPA.
and as you are probably aware, transfer admission is much more difficult than freshman admission, but i still think you got a great chance, i would say you got decent chance at Cornell and Columbia i would not recommend Dartmouth(b/c you are intl. and you gotta start from 1st year again, unless they take your credits *note they might not take all your credits)
I think you should try Harvard or Yale(i think they are big reaches)
Princeton has no transfer so....
Upenn is slight reach, but i think it's a good place, especially when they offer fin. aid to canadians
Brown-unless you have money... the last time i checked, they do not offer canadians with fin. aid.
anyway, i wish you the best of luck
just spend time on your app. don't wait til the last week :)

new - shes a sophomore applicant which means her HS stats will count (even if she was a junior applicant they would count but my point is that they will have a more considerable weight). Since she is an URM, she can score as low as a 1350 and still have a shot at schools like Harvard, Yale.

Also, SATs will count but not as much as freshman admission. Everything counts when youre talking about schools like HYP. Dont you think these schools get ENOUGH 3.8 GPA applicants?

Transferring to certain schools is actually less selective (if you can even apply this term to the ivys) than freshman admission. Cornell, Brown, and Penn have higher admit rates (which btw isnt everything) for transfer admission.

I actually wasn't planning on transfering until next year to help take some weight off of my highschool grades and get some more EC and also save some money.

I was planning on taking the SATs to help me but I didn't know if I could take them while I'm in University. Isn't it to late?Would it help? Should I take a course that would help me with the SATs like princeton review or something? Cost isn't a issue since my parents are paying for my applications and other costs I will have when apply(aren't they great! lol they still wont buy me a new laptop!)

aca0260-thanks for the advice and being honest. I think I will take an english course. I had plans to take it later if I don't transfer...but I don't know which one would help me the most? I'm going to take Effective Writing.

I am hoping to do research since UofT is big on research hopefully it would help me stand out some more. I was also think of joing the cheerleading team since I have years of cheering in my past or instead of cheerleading team I was thinking Habitat for Humanity since that is something I dreamed about taking part of but never had the time. But I don't want to do to much and not have enough time for to boost my GPA. I am however dropping tutoring highschool students and will tutor chemistry year one students next year a suggestion from my Faculty Advisor, um will it count since I'm getting paid?

Also I trying to get my GPA to a 4.0 KEY WORD TRYING. This school has alot of competition and I surpised I did so well first year.

Newbyreborn-here are my course codes and thanks for the info.

General Chemistry-CHM138H1 and CHM139H1
General Biology-BIO150Y1
Physics the one equal to highschool-PHY110Y1
calculus-MAT135Y1
French as a first language-FRE172H1

Note will awards I got help...I have applied to a few hopefully I get any lol there are so many great students here I doubt it. Oh does anyone know what I can do to get a stronger application?

bump anyone still want to give me advice?

i am going to u of t starting this september, same stuff, Biochemistry, but i can't choose POSt until after first year so...
i picked:
Bio 150
Chm 138,139
Physics138
Calc 135
and Psych 100
for now, i was planning on calc 137, but heard horror stories about the grading curve so...
i am really jealous of your 3.8 GPA, i hope i can get somewhere close to their :)
wat kind of awards you have? mind listing some?
just remember, when you transfer, have a really good reason!!!! you are going to stay at u of t for more than 2 years, schools are going to wonder why the hell you transfering now? because reasons like i want to experience something new, or i want the reputation(never say this), the ones you think of might be a little too generic, you want to think of something really fresh, i.e. i love the smell of roses beside the Mathews residence in the morning, and i enjoy the Pizzaria down the street...
something like that.

i sm not really sure but isn't ethnicity only ascribed if you ar NOT an international student... which I think you are...

Newbyreborn- Its a 3.9 but trust me it will be down next year. It came with tons of work! I also went to a very tough highschool which helped alot.
Anyone can get that G.P.A. if they work hard. I was apart of a study group for every class. That took tons of time but well worth it. And look for old tests it gives you an idea of what the teacher will put on the tests for some classes you can get a tests form 1998-last years.
Don't foget that of you want to Specialize(I can't believe I forgot how to spell it! English is my weak point) you must have a 3.3 or higher for Biochem.

martinibluex- Canada isn't always considered International at some schools. Also I really don't want want my race to be the reason I got in since I worked really hard for it.

which high school did you go to? did you go to Don Mills C.I.? R.H.King? A.Y. Jackson? Langstaff Secondary?
are you doing your apps now? and plan to enter a different school starting september of 2006?

I'm applying this year to hopefully enter in 2006. I want to enter as a Jr. to take weight of my highschool G.P.A. Newbyreborn are you going to to transfer out of UofT?

i will try :)
had no luck in freshman admission :(

don't worry about transferring to much. Because you are still at one of the best Universities in the world!
