So, first of all, I’m from Florida, I’m first generation, and have hispanic heritage. I’m not sure if those factors help.
As for my academics, I will have ended up taking 12 AP’s by the end of senior year. I’m a junior now and planning to get all 4’s for APUSH, AP euro, AP Lang, and Psychology. My SAT is moving to around 1400. Sub editor of school newspaper sophomore year and will be editor in chief senior. It’s probable that I’ll hold an officer position for Interact Club and maybe President of NHS. I also started a Speech and Debate summer camp for inner city middle schoolers that I’ve done since freshman year. I’m also in Spanish Honor Society because I took AP Spanish sophomore year. I’m trying to perfect my SAT essay score, I’m very close. AND, I will have a referral letter from a professor who works in Marketing at USC who knows me very well and I would like to attend Marshall or Annenberg if I got in. Oh, and I also held 4 jobs for a while during sophomore year and most of this year because, well, I needed them. I may get an Internship at Software company over the summer as well.
I’ve gotten pretty much mostly A’s with a few B’s and one or two C’s throughout high school so I think weighted is like 4.4 and my unweighted is around 3.65, which I know is not quite the USC average but hey, it’s hard to get straight A’s in AP’s.
“May get” or “probable” = Pointless until you have them in your hands. As is, I’d say you have a slightly below average chance. Your SAT is quite low, and your GPA is really quite low. You might find getting straight As in AP classes a challenge, but you’re going to be competing with people who do it without breaking a sweat. But since you’re Hispanic, you have the URM thing going for you. Try to get your SAT up, and get straight As or near-straight As in the first semester of your senior year. Your club involvement seems alright to good-ish, but I’m super certain about what your typical USC-admit does
if you show a TON of interest u can get in. Ur stats are fine (even though vague) and USC LOVES interest. My friend was a white female with stats much lower than yours from public school and she got in (mostly cuz she visited twice)-- was very shocking as no one from that school has gotten in for 4 years
Need more certain data versus your plans or intentions. Many people take 12 APs and many do get A’s while doing so - that is the competitive landscape nowadays for people applying to competitive schools. I know one who did just that, took 12 APs had a 4.0uw and a 4.7 wgpa and did not get accepted to USC. Ironically got in a top 10 (ivy). And my guess is USC has plenty of URMs applying so I don’t think that is a differentiation as some may think. Do your best and have other choices where you would love to go. Hope but don’t count on USC - having a dream school is never a good idea.
@cookieloverboy According to the common data set for USC, interest isn’t considered. Your friend probably had really good ECs or essays.
It may say interest doesn’t matter, but I don’t believe that is entirely true at USC. Interviews can be very helpful because you are able to express your enthusiasm and whether it is the interviewer or someone you meet on another type of visit, it is an opportunity to connect with someone there. Through this connection and if you are interesting enough, they may follow you through the process. It happens.
Not sure about the friend discussed above, you never know what they are looking for and need in terms of major, or demographics, but showing interest in (particularly a private) school is never a bad thing. A large public - a lot of times it really doesn’t matter, numbers are too big.
