I’m in 8th grade (applying for 9th) , I live in Japan I used to go to a top international private school but now I go to a smaller international private school further from the capital. I have gone to private schools all my life. I used to live in the middle east for 10 years and I’m an army brat. I’m also Asian American. I’m also applying for financial aid :////
My hobbies include:
Playing the flute (3 years) and violin (5 years but I stopped for a while so I lost touch…)
I would say I’m pretty good at art and abstract art
I’ve spoken french for 6 years
I swim a lot (but not very amazing at it)
I read a lot of young adult books
I watch a lot of old movies (not very relevant to be honest)
My grades:
My seventh grade report card was not that great, I a lot of A’s but not a lot of A+'s, however in Art I got a A++ (that has to count for something right ?)
My eight grade report card is mostly A+'s but for PE I have a B.
I haven’t gotten my SSAT results yet so we shall see…
My teacher recommendations were pretty good I would say, as I am liked by my math and english teacher.
There is a school tour in December so I think I will be going to that.
(current Choate student here) I know for a fact that Choate assess your character beyond transcript (which is still very important) It’s important that you’re able to communicate clearly and confidently with adults, and be assertive and mature when in the classroom, and be able to handle at least 3 hours of intense homework a night while maintaining quality in your work. Your grades are impressive, so keep up the good work, and be sure to mention these personality things (interest in old movies) in your interview bc it shows you’re a multi-dimensional person. Good luck!!
Hey @poppyseedbagel , how wonderful that you are exploring boarding schools in the US! Without knowing your SSATs it is pretty difficult to give you any kind of feedback on chances. One thought…do you have any Japanese proficiency? If you live on an Army base and attend and International school, that might be difficult, but if you do know some Japanese (and/or Arabic if you were in the Middle East), that might be a plus for your admittance.
Also, if you do have some knowledge of Japanese, have you considered St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH? They have a great Japanese program (not to mention French, of course) and have had a strong relationship with bringing in native Japanese students for over 40 years. St. Paul’s is a top notch school that is also strong in the Arts and and in Music.
